James Rubart writes my heart. I hear the words of the Book and the beat of the heart of one who knows the Story both here and in heaven. I've read all of Rubart's books and look forward to May 2014 when the next one is released. Excellent work by an outstanding author. My only problem is I can not put the book down! Two or three days and I'm looking for another! Addictive in a good sort of way.

yes . . . this is exactly the book you need

I was a little leery ordering this because I wasn't sure what tuning (F? G?) the book was written for, what number of strings it was intended for, or what system of notation it used (French? German? Italian?). It's pretty expensive (and hard to find for some reason), so the last thing you want to do is spend all that money and get a book that isn't for your lute.

The answer -- hold onto your hat -- is that this book teaches ALL of those! I'm not saying that a shrewd, musically literate person could ADAPT for those different tunings and TAB systems: it actually teaches each one of those specifically in turn! Though you can use all of those diapason tunings with this book, the majority of the book focuses on six strings tuned G, c, f, a, d', and g'.

Large chunks of text are all over this book, but there still are songs to practice, each with exhaustive notes. It is not, however, an anthology of lute music by any stretch.

It is designed for people who don't have a teacher, though this book assumes you are already able to read music and have experience with some sort of stringed instrument. It does not teach that.

Folks, this is a quality product, not like that cruddy book "Learning to Play the Lute," which seems to be everywhere. It is truly exhaustive. After working through it (142 pages!) you're definitely going to know what is what with a Renaissance lute. There is simply no other book out there remotely comparable to this. If you're serious, THIS is the one.

Two negatives I can of are that there's no CD to accompany the book, and it's not spiral-bound.

Note: "A Tutor for the Renaissance Lute," published by Schott Music in 1991, is a re-do of the author's earlier work "An Introduction to Lute Playing," from 1961 -- so don't also buy that.

When I bought this from Amazon, it didn't have a proper cover image, but everything was all right. It wasn't some knock-off job done in somebody's garage, it's a proper, slick book, professionally bound and typeset.

A wonderful instructional book

I must agree wholeheartedly with Caraculiambro. I recently purchased a lute, and I have 0 knowledge of music theory as I have never played an instrument in my life. This book, however, is a wealth of knowledge and covers all the subjects that one needs very well.

From tuning, to holding the lute, to basic timing and fingering, to starting the reader off with introductory songs, and ultimately to more complex ones.

The only thing it doesn't cover is exact tuning/frequencies. Since I'm a completely newcomer to music, the different keys that the book mentions held very little meaning for me (let alone trying to distinguish between octaves). I did some research on that and got a tuning app for my phone that specifies note AND frequency. I created a table as to what each course/string should be tuned to (note and frequency), and now I'm all set.

If you're trying to play a lute, this is a phenomenal resource. Don't hesitate to get it.

Outstanding!

I've played the lute as a strict, self-taught amateur for a number of years, but it's only recently that I decided it was time to learn the instrument properly. Diana Poulton's tutor is justly famous, and I'm glad I finally purchased it. No doubt, it isn't cheap, but it is more than worth the money. Her lessons are clear and the exercises for right and left hand will take a student beyond classical guitar technique to the real world of lute playing. Some exercises are scales, some simply work the hands for the purpose of habituating them to the technique being taught. Happily, there are many actual Renaissance pieces, the first as early as the third lesson, to get the student playing the music that has made the Renaissance lute so beloved. I do not think there is a better book for the purpose, and I urge anyone who wants to learn the instrument to buy it.

A fan's disapointment

I'm a big fan of this type of stuff.
But I feel that Kreisberg could be writing a way better story. This evil circus band has me completely uninterested in what's going on. This seems more like a kiddy cartoony comic based off of a kids show. I'm also, now, a little confused at when is this story supposed to take place? Is there supposed to be a long gap of time between episodes 1 and 2 or something? So far this would make a terrible episode and I believe execs would can it immediately in rough draft stage. Arrow's comic has me way more glued into the story and ampted up for season 3, this makes feel, gosh, I hope I don't have to sit through this kind of soap opera junk and corny plotlines when the show eventually airs. I just feel that a better story could have been chosen to bring publicity for the show. And I feel that this kind of episode would not air at all on this show, or the ratings would tank, so why chose this story to give us a glimpse of what episodes will be like? I'm just disappointed in this story and I feel the writer and artist could do more.

About the Author

Susan M. Gass, Michigan State University and Larry Selinker, NYU

Susan Gass is University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages at Michigan State University. She has conducted research in a wide variety of sub-areas of second language acquisition including language transfer, language universals, second language research methods, and input and interaction. She is the author/editor of numerous books, has served as the President of the American Association for Applied Linguistics and is the President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA).

Larry Selinker is one of the original contributors to the research field of Second Language Acquisition, having introduced the concepts "interlanguage" and "fossilization" and having conducted one of the first empirical studies in "language transfer" research in 1969. Consistently seeking a more unified account which would integrate concepts of "interdialect," "interculture," and "interliteracy" with new media, he is now preparing a 40-plus year fossilization study on participants first looked at in 1964. He has held professorships at the Universities of Michigan and London and visiting professorships at various universities around the world. Currently, he is Visiting Professor at New York University and, exploring processes of� "around sourcing," is helping to organize Research Production Associates.

We abandoned this book

This book was erroneously selected by my professor for our graduate program class. Many students complained about the book's dry and dull content. The authors seem more interested in showing off their academic prowess and overburdening the student with too much information. The book's chapters lack any sort of crystallization to bring the concepts in the chapter together. So, our professor suggested that we abandon the book--we all overwhelmingly agreed.

This book should not be titled "an introductory course".

The book is very clearly written and informative. If you are looking for a book that covers Second language acquisition concepts, theories, and studies, I think this book would be a good resource(my opinion).

Too "Wordy"

This text book has some good information in it, but it is written in a very wordy manner which makes it difficult to follow at times. I prefer to have straight forward writing when I am learning a topic.

Christopher McKinlay is an applied mathematician. While still a graduate student at UCLA, he used a variety of machine learning techniques to reverse-engineer the dating website OkCupid. He received over 1,000 unsolicited messages from women, resulting in 88 dates over the course of three months. His 88th date was with his fiancee.

Let's start with the good:

1. Responder Strategy: this is a strategy of reducing the number of messages and prospective matches so that you get more of the wheat and less of the chaff. This would basically involve avoiding non-divisive questions (basically avoid answering questions that most prospective matches near you would answer the same way), mark few answers as being acceptable for each match question as much as possible, and set questions with one acceptable answer as "mandatory" (lol), two acceptable answers as "very important", and 3+ acceptable answers as somewhat important.

2. Simulated Annealing Procedure: a step-by-step procedure of answering okcupid questions based on your strategy. In summary:

A. delete all your match questions;
B. answer new match questions based on one of the strategies (preferably the responder one and my advise is to answer only questions you deem very important at first, then for each very important match question, answer 25 somewhat important questions);
C. browse for your matches, organized by match percentage;
D. click on one of the top matches and answer their questions;
E. Rinse and repeat...

3. Hooks: basically, write down anything about yourself that would attract your desirable matches enough to message you and be as specific about them as possible. These would include hobbies, career, jokes, etc.

4. Additional tips on sending messages, how to conduct yourself on a date, etc.

Now for for the bad:

1. Searcher Strategy: the very opposite of Responder Strategy and what basically Mckinlay used in his search (SPOILER ALERT: his fiancee found him through a keyword search for tall men with blue eyes near her.). The problem with this strategy is that it generates more chaff than wheat, thus wasting the time and, potentially, money trying to narrow down your prospective matches. Unless the idea of a success rate of 4.5% sounds appealing to you, you might want to avoid this strategy.

2. Outdated information: the internet does age quickly doesn't it? Unless you've been living in space with Major Tom, all of us know that the Importance Scale has changed from a five to four point scale. Also, according to an email I've received from Okcupid staff, mandatory wasn't deleted, but renamed to "very important". Thus, the old "very important" (a question of a weight of 50) has actually been deleted. But it's a minor flaw.

3. Length: waaaay too short. Why couldn't he just write a blog series about his guide to optimizing cupid so that we don't have to spend any mon... nevermind.

Overall, it's not that bad. Is it worth buying though? I think I got some worth from it, but so far many have written about Mckinlay's strategy and procedure. Thus, you probably already have an idea of how to implement it without actually buying the book. :-P

A Peek Behind The Curtain Of Online Dating

After hearing of MiKinlay's story from Wired, I thought it would be fun to do some reading about the method he used in finding his perfect match. This short paper does a great job of summarizing the analysis he did and how he used that data to build a dating profile that appealed to the women he wanted to meet.

If your looking for the code he used, or his exact algorithms your out of luck. There's none of that here. Which is a good thing because if EVERYBODY started doing exactly what he did then it would be useless. However he does give a step by step process on how to optimize your match percentage and give tips on how to find the questions you SHOULD be answering instead of the random stream OKC gives you.

I know some of the comments over on Wired were saying how that article was just an ad for this book/paper. Honestly I don't care, this is a fun little look at the data behind online matchmaking. McKinlay just used that data to make his match percentage higher with the type of people he wanted to meet, which is really what online dating is all about.

I for one would be interested to know what other insights you could glean from the data he (and OKC) have collected. Big data is here to stay and this just gives some practical advice to use on OKC.

Good OKC approach for scientifically-minded OKC users

Like many people, I saw the article in Wired this week. I've been using OKC for a while, and thought it was pretty interesting. I actually spent a few hours analyzing the article, trying to figure out how I could apply it to my own profile. (It did help a bit.)

Then I saw this book. Not all of us are going to write Python scripts to build our profiles or anything like that, but this book is the perfect distillation what he did. In other words—exactly what I needed to apply the info to the profile, nothing more, nothing less.

Worth the $5 if you're an analytical, logical person.

It is a good book
