About the Author
June R. Chapin is Professor of Education at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California. �A former public school teacher, including teaching in the Chicago Public Schools, she is the author or co-author of over a dozen textbooks ranging from the fourth grade to the university-level. Citizenship education is her greatest interest including, including research on voting and community participation of social studies students from the eighth grade to young adults.

This is a good, practical book

I liked this book, it gave many practical examples for teachers to use in the classroom. Social studies is generally a factual subject which can be very boring. This books helps to give you creative ideas for social studies content.

Not very helpful.

I am not too pleased with the usefulness of this text for teaching Social Studies Methods. The book gives many examples of teaching methods for social studies but the book lacks depth or how-to-ness. Okay for a general overview but not much substance. It lacks an overall philosophy or guiding theory. Students reading this text are left to sort through a variety of methods and come to their own decisions about what will work and not work in the classroom. I would rather have seen more of what the current research suggest about teaching than leaving all of the sence making to the reader.

This book is excellent for college students preparing to teach Elementary Ed in any school, public or private. I highly recommend it! It's a book you won't want to sell after you use it, because it's a great book to refer back to once you begin your teaching career.
