I stayed up all night reading this book...

...which is saying something. I haven't done that since I was a teenager and I'm in my forties. To compare this book to Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs, which is arguably the best biography I've ever read, would not be fair; although everyone is going to do that. I struggled with the comparison myself.

Bottom Line: These are two very different books, and this is a great compliment to Job's biography.

Did I learn anything ground breaking? I had hoped to, but I'm not sure I did. (Especially in the "Secrecy chapter - I wanted more!) Still, I did learn a LOT of small things that, added together, made the book feel groundbreaking. I've highlighted several passages in my kindle edition, but I feel like it would be cheating to share more than one with you. My personal favorite has to do with Apple's seeming lack of career paths for their employees; it goes like this:

"...what if it turns out that all that thinking is wrong? What if companies encouraged employees to be satisfied where they are, because they're good at what they do, not to mention because that might be what's best for shareholders?" Well, what if? The Peter Principle is hard to fight against; even more difficult to compete with are the ambitions of people. Adam mentions a saying that I've heard before, "Everyone inside Apple is trying to get out, and everyone outside is trying to get in."

Well, I'm both of those. After reading this book, I still would love to work for Apple; and I'd hate it too. What an exquisite company!
Most revealing to me is that while employees who are entrepreneurs "typically don't stick around for more than a couple of years," the company still manages to thrive in an oddly entrepreneurial way. At the same time, these entrepreneurs had "rich, productive experiences at Apple, where there ... was room for only one..."

Last, there is some speculation and discussion about the struggles Apple will have in keeping it's culture. The consequences of Steve Job's intense involvement followed by his rapid second departure will only really be understood over time - a _lot_ of time. Yet, I found this discussion to be better than any I've read on the web. At the same time, what human could possibly read all that has been written about Apple since late last year?

Despite my desire not to succumb to comparing this book with Isaacson's, I'll end with that comparison: The biography was bigger and the best in its class, and while this book is a quick, easy read, it is the first _real_ book in its class. I probably won't read the biography again, except for reference; I see myself reading Lashinsky's book again and again, cogitating on the philosophies and learning more during each read.

If I could, I'd give the book 4.8 stars, but since I have to round, I don't begrudge it the five stars that I expect most will give. You did a decent job with this book, Mr. Lashinsky, and I'm happy to recommend it.

Decent, but nothing new

This marks the third incarnation of Mr. Lashinsky's "inside" look at the workings of Apple. The Fortune Magazine article was quite good, considering the format limitations. However, as he expanded the story, first in to a short ebook and now the full length version, cracks began to show in the material. What was informative and precise, in short form, began to read as rehashed and bloated, in longer form. Simply put, "Inside Apple" is merely a magazine article which has been padded in to a book.

Now, that's not to say it's a bad read, by any means. Mr. Lashinsky has compiled a commendable briefing on the basics of how Apple operates. He has also added a great deal of analysis and varied opinions, which raise some valid concerns. However, if you have read just about any of the books previously written on Apple/Jobs, you've unquestionably encountered the same stories, concepts, and "inside" information before. What you really have here is a summary of key points from all that has been written about the subject before.

So, a good read, if you want a quick run through of the basic ideology, with some critical analysis thrown in. Just don't expect to find anything particularly new or shocking.

Great shoe-leather reporting

Adam Lashinsky's Inside Apple is likely to be closely read inside and outside the company. Scheduled to be released this week, it's the most important Apple book since Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs and is, in many ways, the perfect companion to the Jobs biography.

If Isaacson's was the Time Magazine or People Weekly version of the Apple story, what Lashinsky delivers -- appropriately enough, given the magazine he works for -- is the Fortune version.

Lashinsky's goal was to understand the company Jobs built as a business. But unlike, Isaacson, Lashinsky didn't have Jobs' cooperation. Nor did the company make any Apple executives or employees available. So like a correspondent debriefing refugees at the border of a war zone, Lashinsky interviewed scores of collaborators, competitors and former employees after they left the confines of Apple's closely guarded Cupertino campus.

The result is a deep dive into an extraordinary enterprise that has disrupted one industry after another while ignoring -- if not deliberately breaking -- most of the rules of modern business management.

The author has had a long life, as a card sharp in Florida and mostly Las Vegas. He has nothing but good things to say about Meyer Lansky. Lots of stories about the casinos and people in the mob. Not a reflective book, just a fun one, quick read.

About the Author
John Hall can still remember the first book he ever read. It was Harry The Dirty Dog. Since that day, he's always loved reading. When he was in fifth grade, he decided he was going to be a writer when he grew up and wrote his first novel, The Mystery of the Leopard's Eyes (unfortunately, it was never published and to this day, still sits in his desk drawer). But years later he did become a published author. John grew up in Brooklyn, with a younger brother and twenty-one cousins (yes, 21!), but now lives in New York City.

Perfection

If you have concerns about information breach and privacy theives, you must read this book. It's a wonderfull depiction of one of the biggest problems in the united states at the moment. The Reality of the Unreal

Dr. John Hall details the reality of the unthinkable: what happens when you are "tagged" by a syndicate of degenerate high tech stalkers, bent on sexual assault, mind invasions, and murder? What would it be like to be, not only viewed and heard ANYWHERE, but also have these predators inside your thoughts?

I might have considered "A New Breed Satellite Terrorism" to be a compelling work of fiction had I not previously known about this technology and the dynamics of gang-stalking. A less informed, more skeptical reader may even reject this book as the work of a deranged, deluded mad man. However,once one reads this account, and does some cursory research on the subject, the tide turns in favor of belief. The details in the book are technically verifiable, the events plausibly framed. The passion of Dr. Hall's relentless pursuit of these techno-terrorists come through in between the lines of the text.

This book is a MUST READ for anyone ever victimized by stalkers of any ilk. It is a sobering warning to all that this CAN happen here---and does, globally, every day. Place yourself in the shoes of the innocent victims detailed in this book and ask yourself: "what prevent this from happening to me, or my loved ones?" You be better equipped to recognize the signs, deal with the onslaught, and aid the un-numbered victims of this monumentally evil technological warfare on innocent people.

Dr. John Hall keeps you on the edge of your seat after explaining the technology. America (the global world) needs to know what hard criminals look like now. Doctors, Private Investigators, Business men ect...no more ski masks and gun point. Nothing is sacred. We can be watched, raped, or stolen from and never really even know what is happening to us! This has to stop and God bless Dr. Hall for trying to bring this to an end. Many, many victims are thankful. A MUST READ.

Our Mission -- "Save the content, save the world."

About a year ago, a web designer recommended that I read "Content Strategy for the Web" by Kristina Halvorson. Although the designer was very enthusiastic about the book, I felt my nightstand was already overloaded with "must reads," and I politely declined. What a mistake!

There is a bright side. By waiting a year, I was able to read the second edition of "Content Strategy for the Web" by Kristina Halvorson and Melissa Rach. This book is compelling, entertaining, visionary, instructive, applicable and needed. I'm a Marketing Director, and I've made this required reading for my web team and writers. I've also shared highlights with my boss and my boss' boss.

I'm joyfully spreading the word about the importance of web content. Content needs to be considered at the beginning and throughout the web development process. Good content improves SEO, increases web traffic, establishes your brand, and works with the site design and architecture to create an engaging and satisfying user experience that promotes customer relationships and repeat business. See how important content is?

This book will lead you step-by-step through web content production, process, implementation, and maintenance. The book is very thorough, consistently logical, and surprisingly funny. I suggest you read it with a highlighter, but this is more than a "how to" book. It's a revolution, and it will completely change your view of web development. I would also buy two copies of the book because you will want to share it, and you won't want to give your copy away.

Very good, but lacking in report examples

This book is a great introduction to the world of content strategy.
My only issue is that it is lacking in what I feel is the most important chapter: Discovery / Audit.
Example, "there are dozens (if not hundreds) of possible subjective factors you can review during a qualitative audit." However, only 9 examples are given.
Additionally, the Findings Report section gives only 3 examples of insightful reports. It would be awesome to have more examples of audit reports.

LAST VOLUME OF A GREAT MANGA

This is the final omnibus volume of the originol "Gunsmith Cats" manga, however there is a five volume series "Gunsmith Cats Burst" that follows as a sequel.

In my opinion this is one of the greatest manga by one of the greatest mangaka, Kenichi Sonada's art style is simmilar to the style of art used in the originol "Bubblegum Crisis" OVA and he was the character designer for that series.

This manga should stand as one of the corner stones in any manga/anime fans library - in my opinion.

For a musician who has spent the better half of his life either intoxicated or on a drug high, Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has produced a surprisingly detailed account of his life. Raised in the 1960s and '70s by a drug dealer father who first introduced his preteen son to drugs by mashing them into bananas, the high school delinquent and UCLA dropout seemed destined for a life of rabble-rousing until his high school band—cofounded by close friends Michael "Flea" Balzary and Hillel Slovak—took off and became one of the most popular groups of the 1990s. Though he peppers his book with little known facts (for instance, the author narrowly missed being named Clark Gable Kiedis), the punk-funk rocker dedicates too few pages to his introspective music-writing process and too many to his incessant drug use and revolving door of girlfriends (which included actress Ione Skye, singer Sin�ad O'Connor and director Sofia Coppola). But while Kiedis fails to scratch beneath the surface of his fast-lane life, his frankness is moving, especially toward the end of the book, when his mea culpa turns into a full-blown account of recovery and redemption. (Kiedis has been sober for almost four years.) Though not generally as articulate as Marilyn Manson's similar autobiography, Kiedis's story of childhood drug use, adolescent fame and hard-won maturity will strike a chord with fans of Drew Barrymore's Little Girl Lost.

About the Author
Anthony Kiedis grew up in L.A. and formed The Red Hot Chili Peppers in high school. The group's breakthrough album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, was recorded in 1991; their 1999 album Californication sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Their latest album, By the Way, is one of their best sellers yet. The band toured extensively in 2003. Kiedis lives in the Los Angeles area.

Very will written and full of emotions.

Whether you are a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan or not this book is a great read. Kiedis does a great job of getting the reader into the heart and thoughts of his struggles and successes. The story will keep you guessing until the very last page. Just when you think life is grand and you feel this sense of "You did it, Anthony!!!," you turn the page and your heart sinks over his choices. If you think you have an idea of "Who" Anthony Kiedis is, read the book, his heart is bigger than you thought.

One of my favorites. Need I say more? It's Anthony Kiedis's life- filled with drugs, sex, relationships gone wrong and everything about his time with the Chili Peppers. Read it, you won't regret it.

Fantastic read for any Red Hot Chili Peppers fan! I'm not that much of a reader but I had a hard time putting this book down. Very entertaining for an autobiography. Anthony's personal accounts are so personal and honest that I can't help but become an even bigger fan of his. Glad to see him out there living a sober life.

Highly recommended.

I am a lawyer. If I did not know otherwise, I would be willing to swear Avi Domoshevizki is a lawyer too. I was impressed by his accurate and professional descriptions of legal negotiations and processes as well as his deep knowledge to the smallest details. Yet, sticking to the details does not derogate from the thrill and suspense of the plot. There is not a single dull moment throughout the whole book. That's what I call a professional at work. Green kills is an imaginary thriller but I still cannot get rid of the nagging thought – "can the scenario the author describes happen in the real world?" A frightening thought I must admit.

Title - Fast pace medical thriller
I don't know about you, but I thought venture capital's job is to give talented people money, pray and if the venture ends up as a success story, make sure to receive all the glory. Well, Green kills adds other types of risks, lethal ones, into the picture so it changed my mind. The job is probably by far more complicated. Especially if one, like Ronnie, who has his own strong beliefs, has to think out of the box in order to overcome continuous unexpected difficulties, while being unfamiliar with the word "impossible" or "for your own sake - don't interfere".
Green kills is a story about a medical startup company (btw, with a great product - my compliments to the author), venture capital and crime. But also about passion, love and friendship. Domoshevizki uses all those ingredients to cook for us a fascinating dish, one that is very difficult to stop reading. The ingredient most appealing to me is the fact that there is really a sophisticated riddle behind the mysterious and dangerous plot that keeps you wandering throughout the book - "how could it be done". Warning: do not start reading it in the evening. You will probably won't get your full night sleep.

One of the best thrillers I have read in a very long time...

It usually takes me quite a few weeks, if not longer, to finish a book given my busy schedule. This is the first time I recall picking up a book in the afternoon and not setting it down until it was finished reading later that evening. A true thriller, filled with twists, surprises, evolving characters and non-top suspense until the very end.
Definitely and absolute must read for anyone involved in the hi-tech industry, and just s equally must for anyone wishing to understand the behind the scenes of the startup market and the venture capital industry that feeds it. The story is so real, accurate and vivid that it immediately reminded me of some of the great periods I had in the early days of my first start up, with Avi as my first investor, mentor and guide.
Pick it up and read it - guaranteed pleasure and you will definitely not regret it...

5 Stars for REA books!

This little 90 page book is incredible. It may be small but it's stuffed with hundreds of usefull words and phrases for the traveler or simply for the curious mind. Not to mention is prefaced with a breif history of the country and some interesting stats on the current republic of Romanina. You will also find some lovely black&whites of certain land marks and notable locations; like Dracula's castle. This book is incredibly helpful with those interesting accent and stress-markers that are so different to the English language. (Now I know why they say English is the most difficult language to learn!) The easy to read, easy to follow phonetics make pronunciations virtually fool-proof, without having to buy tapes.

If you are looking for a casual, easy to use, non-threatening, introduction into this beautiful and culturally diverse language, I highly recommend this book. It is the perfect stepping stone in your quest to being able to communicate in or at least understand the basics of Romanian!!

Pragmatic if not scholarly

This book can give English natives who do not master phonetic transcription of any kind a very useful idea of how to pronounce Romanian by reading and not listening--as close as native English speakers can get it. As long as students of Romanian possess no theoretical basis such as phonetic transcription (either American or European) which can help with reading a foreign language, and want to get a crash course in everyday phrases, this book provides an almost ideal approach to the learning of spoken Romanian--it is "nice and easy", as promised.

To those who want to learn it for more serious purposes, though--such as getting a better grasp of the language, writing correctly, or even taking academic courses in Romanian--I would suggest them to supplement with more serious books, such as the Teach Yourself Romanian Complete Course, for example.

like the title says. "Nice and Easy"

i bought this book because my girlfriend's family is from romania and she speaks the language. i wanted to learn the language so her family would see me trying to fit in and... well, let me fit in. after i got the book, i pulled out my phone and sent a text in romanian. she replied back in romanian. the only problem with the book is it does'nt go very deep. it's pretty short. i'd love it if the same people wrote something bigger in the same format. the pronunciation guides were great. if you're just looking at getting started at learning romanian, or you just want to impress a romanian/american girl (cuz they're so hot) buy the book.
