I bought this book on Kindle because it was the fastest way to get it so that I would have it in time for this past semester when it started. The author is my professor in the particular Evolution class that I am taking and it was used as our text. I am glad that I have it on my kindle because even though I don't usually read a book more than once, I will be reading this one again after I am finished with school and can just relax and soak it in as I read along. I have all my life believed in God but I have also believed that we only have part of the story. This book is a very good starting point to learn about Evolution, and Sherrie pulls factual information from all over for this book. This book is written in a language that everyone can understand. Thats what makes it so nice, and in the title it does say that it is the Basics and it is. It is an easy read and you may find yourself searching out other books about those people mentioned in the book, like Darwin for starters. Deanna

This book is strictly vegan and raw food diet. It can be done with full commitment... it's informative but might be to much for some.

Valuable Information

This book provides valuable information and it is a quick easy read. This is not an easy diet to follow but it does work. I believe it is because you start eating nourishing whole foods and avoid processed garbage that may be cluttering your system and preventing you from getting better. The issue with not eating meat is controversial but even if you don't believe in it long-term, when your body rests from digesting heavy foods like animal protein, it has more of an opportunity to work on healing. It is incredible how after just 2 days of following the diet, my inflammation and pain goes down considerably and as soon as I start on my old habits, the pain returns. This is a challenge for me but I plan to continue eating this way until my body heals and I am off prednisone, then I will probably introduce wild caught salmon and occassional grass-fed beef and organic meats very sparingly. All you can do is make it work for you. This is an infinitely better way to try to manage an autoimmune disease than being on damaging steroids and immunosuppressive drugs.

Amazing Book and totally worth the price

Being a beginer in this field I had extensively researched on the available books and their reviews. To say the least, I am extremely glad of my purchase of this book. This book is true to the saying "A picture is worth thousand words". Great care has been taken to illustrate any equation/ concept with beautiful 3D pictures. This not only helps one to understand the concepts as clearly as possible and also without any doubt in ones mind. If you take any of the books written in the last decade or so on signal processing, I feel that authors find it tough to draw a line between explaining the basics rigourously and introducing readers to the latest developments in DSP. In the interest of making the book too bulky, lot is left to the readers to program and plot the diagrams using softwares like Matlab. This book is a classic in the truest sense and doesn't depend on any software for further illustration. After reading this book, it makes it much more easier to handle mathematically rigourous books like Proakis.
I have one comment though on the preface though, the author tends to say that reader can choose to read chapters on continuous time systems and discrete time systems independently. However, I found myself going back to reading the corresponding chapter in continuos time systems, after begining to the discrete time systems chapter (not that I regretted it :) ).

Very Well Organized. Excellent Presentation. Concise.

This book is the clearest statement of the core elements of both analog and digital signal processing that I've seen anywhere.
My copy is showing wear. I purchased it before Amazon.com was a gleam in Anyone's eye, and am disappointed to see that it is out of print.
If you're looking for an understandable statement of what your professor's been talking about, then GetThisBook, if you can.
Does it have any weaknesses? A few small ones, I suppose, but - compared to the competition - they're not worth mentioning.

Amazing book~!

The best treatment of Transform analysis anywhere!
This is an underknown/underrated book, but it destroys other texts. Peter has done an incredible job with a fully conceptual presentation, and amazing 3D graphics that really explain the material for the first time clearly. You won't find all these 3D graphics in other books!
Peter really presents the material visually, orgazing it with useful charts (not just a bunch of meaningless tables with formulas, like other books). His entire approach to organization is unmatched. You won't learn the material as well from other books, so even if you are required to use another book as a textbook, get this book as well, and make it your primary source for studying.

Too good for kids!

If there's one thing that irks me (and there are many) it's that wonderful old books like this one have been dumped in the "kiddie lit" pile and are considered unsuitable for adults. Good God, must we have violence, graphic sex, and non-stop profanity in every paragragh in order for a book to be worthy of our attention?

This is the story of a family (a big one) and of the two fascinating, unusual people who created it. It's also a look at the early years of the 20th century and how they changed life for all time. We think of it as a lazy, nostalgic time when people were rooted in tradition. In reality, it was a time of rapid change when Americans were excited about the future and their growing importance in the world. Industries were waking up to new ways of doing things that increased productivity. Increased productivity meant lower costs, which meant that the average citizen could enjoy products (like automobiles) that had been rich men's toys only a few years before. It was a time of prosperity and optimism.

Frank and Lillian Gilbreth were efficiency engineers who were at the forefront of this movement. And like all engineers, they tended to run their home by the same principles that guided their profession. As their oldest daughter points out in her humorous-but-incisive introduction, a great deal of "regimentation" is absolutely necessary in a large family or chaos reigns. Not that there wasn't plenty of chaos anyway, and most of it is hilarious.

Lillian Gilbreth was of the generation called the "New Woman." Feminism wasn't born in the 1960's, but had its roots in the era when women were fighting for the right to attend college, to be professionals, and to vote. With her proud husband supporting her, this gentle but strong woman took her place in a profession that even today is still largely male-dominated. And she raised a houseful of children while she was doing it!

It's also the story of a successful marriage which tragically ended too soon. I love the contrast between the bombastic self-made man and the quiet girl from the wealthy California family. Each brought strengths into the partnership and they respected and supported each other both personally and professionally.

Yes, this is a book that would not (as we used to say) raise a blush on the cheek of a modest young lady (assuming you could find one) but it's also a down-to-earth telling of family life in an era when there were no "experts" telling people how to raise their children. The story of two very different people and how they loved and taught their large brood is not just entertaining, but educational. I loved this book as a child and I enjoyed reading it again. I can't really imagine anyone who WOULDN'T. It's a true classic.

An old favorite

I recently had a writing assignment "How a book or movie influenced how I lived my life." I chose this book. Granted, in no way did I want twelve children, but I was inspired to live life more efficiently, trying to find "The Best Way to Do Things." I didn't even approach Lillian Gilbreth's effective methods of child rearing, but I was inspired to be more even-tempered. Her ideas of "What is the best use of my time" inspired me to return to college and I thank her for that. Even if you don' read the book I recommend checking Lillian Gilbreth out on Wikipedia and be in awe, as I was, of her achievements.

Amazing Memoir!

I've watched the first version of the movie, Cheaper by the Dozen. I didn't know it was loosely based on a book. The book is nothing like the movie, however. It's better! I found myself reading passages aloud to my husband and looking up the Gilbreth family on the Internet. A remarkable family and a fun read. I just bought the sequel, Bells on their Toes. I look forward to reading more about this fascinating family. The stories may retell events that occurred roughly one hundred years ago, but there's nothing dry about this book. A very funny read!
