Very misleading title!!!

Not at all what I expected. I recently purchased this book as a way to brush up on my boreal forest wilderness skills in preparation for a big move to Alaska. Imagine my surprise on the ferry up when I discovered it was merely a biography and included essentially no how-to information. A decent read if you want to hear about 1 man's adventures outdoors, but of little value to those looking for skills-related information.

Daniel Leston was born in Canada, yet spent the majority of his adult years living and traveling throughout the US. Though his working career was spent in the unrelated field of designing and manufacturing complex, industrial machinery, he never lost touch with his lifelong passion for both writing and the study of history, which extends all the way back to his early, student days at the University of Buffalo. Leston writes so much better than others that I am probably being tough on ...

If someone else wrote this book I would have given it 4 stars. But Mr. Leston writes so much better than others that I am probably being tough on him. This wasn't quite as good. The Alexander's tomb one previous to this one had me stumped up to the last chapter. "The Amun Chamber " is awesome. Want more books by him now. Read :The Snow Leopard, The Amun Chamber, The Emperor's Treasure, The Genghis Tomb and honestly enjoyed them all

I generally like this series, but this book is just OK. I enjoyed the overall plot and historical aspects, but the dialogue is stilted and the editing is terrible. I won't stop reading the Manning series, but I hope things improve a bit.

I love all of the Professor Manning books, this one was good and the story interesting, the only complaint was the dialogue was very stilted, did not flow very well, I am not sure why, the other books were fine.

Niall O'Higgins is a software consultant specializing in mobile, tablet and cloud computing. His accomplishments include designing and implementing numerous mobile and web platforms using MongoDB, Python and Pylons/Django/Pyramid. Prior to starting his consulting business, he was a software engineer at Metaweb Technologies, where he worked on Freebase.com (now owned by Google). He is the founder and organizer of both the San Francisco Python Web Technology Meet-up, PyWebSF and the Bay Area Tablet Computing Group, We Have Tablets. He has published quite a bit of Open Source software - contributing to OpenBSD and Pyramid among others - and frequently speaks at conferences and events.

Clipped, but not edited.

As is sometimes the case, the colophon on the cover is the best part of the book. If you look closely, you'll see O'Reilly clipped the tail off the cover Mongoose. They could have saved the editing attention for the inside of the book.

This book is a collection of quick installation walk throughs and minimal examples. The examples are repetitive: the same setup code shown, at length, with a very few lines of new code to illustrate a point. Don't look for patterns that will stick with you, and don't look for hints about building production systems. Do look for detailed instructions on doing installations that are second nature to any Python programmer.

At ten dollars, this is overpriced. There is enough material for about 10 pages of modestly utility. That's a dollar a page. High, even in these days of low publishing cost and high margin.

very little content, mostly comprised of generalities rather than specific guidance

i did not check the page length of this book before i purchased it, in fact i don't think i have ever done that, but i clearly need to before buying any more books from O'Reilly.

So this book weighs in at just under 53 pages--this is not a 'work in progress' but the final version. So that's the most conspicuous issue i have with this book, but it's not the only one. In other words, this book is not 53 pages of densely packed, penetrating insight.

Nor even close; the content that does fill these 53 pages is sometimes average and sometimes worse. For instance, this is a book about a language-specific client library for a database server. At the top of the list of topics to include should be any idiosyncratic features of the client library--i.e., those that you can't intuit from a knowledge of Mongo and Python. In other words, the unusual features of the language-specific bindings vis-a-vis the parent library are clearly the priority subject matter for such a book. One such area is the use of regular expressions in a query; the Python client uses a completely different syntax and structure versus Mongo (and also when compared with other client libraries), and yet this subject is never even mentioned in this book

Doesn't add anything over the online documentation

I needed a database for the Web App I'm making and thought a document store would be nice, because it makes it really easy to look up attributes of objects I store in it. Given I've been hearing good things about MongoDB the past year, I decided to finally give it a serious try. So I picked up MongoDB and Python: Patterns and processes for the popular document-oriented database hoping to pick up some best practices.

Sadly the book is really basic, so while it was helpful to get the hang of the syntax, I could have learned that from their documentation. They reuse a lot of code between examples, making them rather repetitive and don't really show off any examples that show the benefits of having a document store like MongoDB. Furthermore, the book is only 53 pages, which really doesn't justify the price. So I'd skip this one and just go for the online documentation and experimenting yourself.

A very good read.

This book was sort of hard to get into for the first few chapters, but once I did it was so hard to put down. The writing was excellent and the story just seem to flow effortlessly.

After years and years working at about every kind of job you can think of....Lacy Owens has decided to try a career as a realtor, but things are moving way to slow and she's finding it very hard to keep her head above water. She decides to watch the obit pages in the newspaper with hopes to find potential clients in the future. She been to a few funerals already, but this time she runs into a brick wall aka; Lieutenant Commander Mick Riley, and as a result she ends up flat on her back.

Lieutenant Commander Mick Riley, a member of the fabled SEAL Team Six, can't pull his eyes from Lacey Owens at the funeral of his mentor. There is just something about her that he can't shake. She's not a raving beauty like most of the women he's dated in the past, but that doesn't really seem to matter in this case, because he still can't seem to get her out of his head for some reason.

After agreeing to dinner together, they decide to become friends. It all works fine for a little while anyway....They play scrabble or monopoly with a group of their friends, or they all just hang out and share dinner & drinks together. But the attraction towards one another becomes to strong for either one of them to ignore. Her friends tell her not to worry about the future, just live for today. The trouble is...she's not the just "love em' and leave em'" type of person and he's not the settling down type. He's married to his career and could be called back into action at any time. If she let's herself fall in love with someone like him, she could be in for a world of hurt when he picks up and leaves her behind.

There's a lot happening in this story. First you have Maeve who inherits the house they live in from her grandmother. She's divorced and has a few other deep dark secrets of her own to work out.

Then there's also Bess. She also rents a room from Maeve and unbeknownst to them at the time...she's pregnant with her abusive ex-boyfriends baby. She keeps that secret to herself until she's outted by Jack...A fellow Navy officer that works along side of Mick on the base.

Through out this whole story; all of these people interact closely with one another. In fact; they all become sort of one big happy family. Those bonds and close friendships they form together, make this a very warm- hearted read.

Would I recommend this book? Most definitely, yes!

This was a perfect romance and I will difinitely be looking for more from Kate Aster. I hope she continues this series. I want to know what happens with Bess and Maeve and Jack. I recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.

Great book by a new-to-me author

Ms Aster is a very pleasant surprise. Here's a woman who is a new author to me who writes well! That's almost unheard of with so many authors these days. In addition to an interesting plot and very likeable characters, she obviously edited and proofread her work. The plot flows beautifully and is realistic. I hope Ms Aster is working hard on her next novel. She'll be on my buy list. This is one that will be on my re-read at some time in the future list as well.
