He received his BS in India, his PhD in Canada, and his MBA and MS in the United States.

Not up to snuff

I just finished the course that was taught by Dr. Kanabar. This is the second course that I've taken with him in regards to project management. He used this as the text book for the course. I got an A/B+ in his courses, but not because of this book. The concept of the PMBOK is that a large group of professionals within the field get together and discuss project management and put forth documentation that is meant to help a project manager create a solid plan to tackle a project. This book spends a fair amount of each chapter complaining about how the authors didn't like the terms that the PMBOK team agreed upon and gave reasons why theirs is better.

It does touch upon the basics of each core concept but I can't agree with the other reviewer that it is worth anything for the experienced project manager. If you are looking for a solid book to get you started in Project Management, then this is not the book for you. If you have experience in true project management, this book will not help you. If you want a read that will entertain you by a bit by someone nitpicking over every term and phrase in the PMBOK, then you've hit pay dirt.

The logic of the chapters doesn't make sense even to the author. As a textbook, you skipped all over the book in the readings, the path from Chapters 1 to 2 to 3 obviously was not good for a beginner on a Masters Level. The chapter content felt the same way, very jumbled and not laid out in a structured way.

All in all, I think that the authors are very knowledgeable, but after finishing the book, I do not feel more confident that I could take on the PMP exam.

This book adds nothing to one's understanding of project management

"The Art and Science of Project Management, 2nd edition" is so full of grammatical and spelling errors that I could hardly believe my eyes. I found myself constantly distracted by thoughts of "how could this book be published like this?" Typeos in the text are one thing (of which there were plenty), but inaccurate mathematical formulas just created confusion. At least one in four mathematical examples in this book contain errors. Sections covering crucial formulas like NPV were terribly brief, confused and the formulas used were simply wrong.

The book was printed in black and white. As a result many of the line charts weren't readable... until the 12th chapter when the book started using dashed and dotted lines.

The book didn't even have a big picture map of the different project management processes. There wasn't any section that explained "OK, the deliverables from each process are x,y,z." I felt utterly confused and frustrated trying to use this book as my primary study guide for the course.

Studying project management, especially if you're trying to learn the PMI way of doing things, is challenging. This book offers absolutely no guidance. If you're like me this book will confuse and frustrate you.

An intelligent non-technical introduction to chaos.

Being a physicist I frequently get bored with "science for the layman" books (for instance, Hawking's "Brief History of Time"). This was not the case with Stewart's "Dice" book. It is very well researched and written, in a style that wisely combines historical information with new discoveries, which are, therefore put into perspective. You can even try your hands in simple calculations with your PC. On the whole, a very balanced exposition, without, thank God!, the usual exageration on the place of chaos in the future of science. A very good place to start.

A great intro to non-linear dynamics

I read and thoroughly enjoyed the first edition and purchased the second for the three new chapters. This book is a fun romp through the subject matter, just mathematical enough to get the gist wthout getting bogged down. I read this book for the overview of the subject and am now going through the Strogatz textbook for the details.

One thing to be aware of is that the original books published by Blackwell are preferable to the Penguin reprints. The Penguin books have *much* smaller text and figures.

The best chaos for layman

This mesmerizing historical overview of nonlinear science, full of seedy ideas and fascinating expositions (from heartbeat to weather forecast) is well worth reading. One of those "aha !" books that will broaden your understanding of the universe (and the rest), it is very "visual" and..well, a friend of mine said she considered it a "mental thriller" since it touches on the great old questions of determinism and predictability. As for "mathematics" in the title- don't be put off. The book is virtually mathless.

A "Must Have" refrigeration book. Buy two !

If you've done some HVAC work but find yourself stumped the first time you work on a freezer or frig, then you need this book!. This is a world of oil losses, hard to know line pressures, strange refrigerant valves and controls and head masters, etc. And this book will explain them all to you with lots of plain talk, plain examples, great drawings, and even a cd-rom of animation. And best of all, it has a page of "Rules of Thumb", such as; High Efficieny (seer) condenser splits = 20 degrees and below. And since refrigerant recovery of freezers and frig's are far more common place than HVAC work, it covers several methods of evacuation and recovery. This book has lots of troubleshooting notes and lots of pictures and all the basics of refrigeration from motors, capillarys, TEV'S and defrosters through superheat and critical charging and so much more. I own many hvac books and this one absolutely stands out as a 'must have' book ! Another good book to have when you want to "master" the trade, is Technician's Guide to Refrigeration Systems'by Corinchock. And of course, Troubleshooting and Servicing Modern Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems by Tomczyk. Warning that Tomczyk's book is sold as several books, each with a few chapters, so only buy the complete book I mentioned above, else you will have duplicate text.

the book is well put together and provides well thought out information, as well as being in depth enough to help anyone serious about the HVAC/R trade. I hate spending money for bad books and am happy to recommend this book for purchase. Buy it.
