AN INTERESTING BOOK ABOUT THE "WORST FILMMAKER OF ALL TIME"

Author Rudolph Grey wrote in the Introduction to this 1992 book, "A biography, under the most favorable circumstances, is a slow and difficult undertaking. There were unusual problems in the case of Ed Wood Jr., and the task of reconstructing his life and documenting his work was arduous and complicated... Former associates... refused to discuss the past; others flatly denied ever knowing Ed Wood---or came down with a sudden case of amnesia. Most of Ed Wood's own documentation of his career... were lost or sold throughout his three decades in Hollywood... The material in this volume is the result of ten years of research. Hundreds of interviews were involved, and many participants were contacted repeated over the years when new facts came to light... This is an oral history by those who knew Wood intimately... I have provided ... a chronology for the 'who-what-when-wheres' of Ed Wood's life. The mystery of the 'why' is best revealed in the stories I have woven together in the main body of this book." (Pg. 7)
John Andrews notes, "When they were shooting Bride of the Monster up in Griffith Park, and he dug out that lagoon of a thing, for the octopus... it was cold, and Jesus, midnight, and it was stolen... Bela was drunk, and stoned, and loaded out of his mind... and HE got in the water! So, it was pretty wild times, and fun times, it was good times, making pictures. That's the only thing that counts is getting the thing on film. That's all that mattered. No matter what you have to do." (Pg. 67)
Mona McKinnon said, "There was a book that came out, The Count: The life and films of Bela "Dracula" Lugosi, and it said, "Edw. D. Wood Jr., producer, director, promoter, made the worst movies in Hollywood.' And it went on and on, panning him. It took his pictures apart. Eddie just laughed. He thought that was so funny." (Pg. 127)
Phil Cambridge said, "there was nothing sissy about him... He was always on the sauce... always. Blanche Bloom, who never found anything unusual about the fact that he wore women's clothes, would come in every day and discuss the latest fashions with Ed... I once said to him, 'Ed, if you could have anything in life, what would you be?' He said, 'I would come back as a blonde, a woman blonde.' He denied having homosexual relationships of any kind." (Pg. 141)
Two others notes, "Eddie was a violent drunk... Ed would go to the extremes. It depressed me because I didn't want to see a friend of mine wasted away on that stuff. He would be talking to me and just black out. I was his drinking buddy... Eddie couldn't handle his booze... Ed would take a straight shot, or a double shot, and straight. With a water chaser." (Pg. 145)
Phil Cambridge added, "Someone back East was having an 'Ed Wood Day' and were going to show his films, and when he got that letter, he was just... thrilled. I mean, he brought it into work, and he read it to me twice, and said, 'You read it!' I read it. He said, 'Isn't that nice that somebody remembers me, and that someone thinks of me.' And Ed Wood, to me, had always been this old drunk who wrote porn." (Pg. 154)
For we "fans" of Ed Wood's films, this book will provide a great deal of insight into this troubled, yet strangely attractive figure.

Ed Wood Through The Eyes of Those Who Knew Him

This is a labor of love, taking ten years and many interviews, as well as research, to give us the best hope we'll ever have of getting an understanding of maverick Ed Wood.
The structure is mostly clips from interviews, letters, and some of Wood's works, mostly interviewes. Thus one gets a sense of Ed Wood that in no way tries to be objective - instead it's about people who knew him, and their statements stand on their own (even when they conflict). There is actual research done as well - filmographies, book summaries, a small history - but most of the book is interviews.
The style however actually works - someone like Ed Wood may not always leave a very good trail. In addition, being very much a unique person in the unique culture of bargain-basement hollywood, personal testimony is just about the only way to have a hope to comprehend his stories.
The result is a fascinating, personal, and respectful book on a surprisingly complex man. Don't expect any punches pulled either - Ed Wood for all his likeability and charm (which he had in spades), was an occasional conman, and as his life degenerated, he fell into alchoholism, poverty, and domestic violence. Do expect a very personal portrait.
This book is an absolute must for any fan of Wood, B-movies, and the underside of Hollywood. As I write this it is out of print, but I gladly shelled out the money for a used copy. May it return to press soon - but you owe it yourself to get it.

Great for fans. Funny and well organized.

Most likely this is the best book about Ed Wood published. Very well put together and fun to read. No one holds back in the bio. For fans of Ed Wood this is the book to read.
