Lost in translation

Went to Japan.. most of these phrases made no sense to them. Finally met an American who spoke fluent Japanese. I showed him this book, he said to throw it out - none of it was accurate.

This book is insane!

I picked this book up on a whim and I cannot believe how crazy it is. It is so much fun just to flip through which, in fact, we were passing around and doing. I would suggest it to anyone that wants an in depth view of the slang and phrase that *ehem* would NOT make the cut in a normal dictionary.

This book is definitely not for children. There are sections that cover everything from slang terms, to fighting terms, to the nasty things you want to do to people. Everything a girl needs on her visit to Japan ;)

My only problem with it is the fact that some of the phrases in it are a bit outdated. Other than that it is perfect!

Not Just 'Dirty' Words

An excellent companion for your Japanese studies. the title is a bit misleading, as it is not just 'dirty' words. There is a lot of information about the Japanese culture and how you should address others, along with phrases more useful than where is the toilet, train station, hotel, etc... There are different chapters about different situations as well as the two chapters (Scat and Sex) about 'dirty' words. Not comprehensive but quite useful.

Part III offers commentaries on the encounter from a variety of perspectives. The authors assess the original encounter as well as Gadamer's subsequent reflections on it.

About the Author
In 2007, Nikola Danaylov was a master's degree student in Political Science looking for an interesting topic to write his thesis on. Nikola was tired of WWI and WWII research papers and wanted to do something different, something that not everyone was familiar with, where he could dare to make a contribution. One day, as he was watching the news coming from Iraq and Afghanistan, Nikola decided to look into drone warfare. Doing research on military drones pushed him into the field of Artificial Intelligence and there he discovered Ray Kurzweil's seminal book, "The Singularity is Near." The very next book he read was Charlie Stross' science fiction novel, "Accelerando." In 2009, he completed his master's degree and entered the army of unemployed job seekers at the peak of the recession. "I stopped counting after I sent out 300 resumes - I got one interview which apparently didn't go well because they never called me back, Nikola remembers. "One of my applications went out to the first and only blog dedicated to the technological singularity - Singularity Hub. The Hub was looking to hire a staff writer and, given my education, past research and writing skills, I thought I made the best candidate you could get. I eagerly anticipated an email telling me how totally perfect I was for the job, but the email never came. So, after two weeks of waiting in vain, it slowly started to dawn on me that I wasn't getting that job either. Then, a crazy thought occurred to me: maybe, just maybe, I didn't need them. Perhaps there was some tiny chance I might be able to do it on my own. I could start my own Singularity website. I mean, how hard could it be?" Riveting interviews that will stretch your mind and satisfy your curiosity.

I have been listening to Nikola Danaylov's (alias Socrates)'s superbly incisive and insightful interviews for a long time, and wait with excitement for the next fascinating person he interviews [see singularityweblog]. Now we have these incredible interviews compiled into Conversations with the Future, which I find so valuable in complementing the audio and video interviews. Regardless of your how one thinks about the future, each of these interviews will sharpen your thinking and open new reflective and contemplative avenues for any curious soul. I have learned a considerable amount from each individual, and my reading has broadened appreciably as a result of Nikola Danaylov's remarkable accumulation of learned people's deep thoughts and deep work. I am already looking forward to the next volume!!

The title says it all

This is an excellent read, coming at the questions of the "technological singularity" from a variety of different angles. Remarkably, the "conversations" are with some really high-level thinkers, yet are presented in a way that is readily accessible even if you've never given this stuff any serious thought before. And, rather than presenting a single, monolithic "this is what's coming" vision, these conversations offer a diversity of views, coming at the question from many different angles.

Whether we think about it consciously or not, we all know that technology is advancing and bringing us to a place where our tools are becoming something much more than "tools" have ever been before. Our smartphones, our laptops, the internet itself -- things which did not even exist, and which most of us would not have even imagined could exist, a few decades ago -- are already indispensable to our lives. And they have changed us. As our tools become smarter and smarter, maybe smarter than us ... how will they change our lives, and, more importantly, how will they change us? This book does not answer those questions. Instead, it provokes them.

The author presents a delightful variety of perspectives on just what that future may hold, and just what that future could mean to who and what we are. Heavy stuff, coming from heavy thinkers, but presented relatively lightly. You don't need to be any sort of expert to be able to follow the conversations. It's a lively and engaging read, provoking thoughts that you ask yourself why you didn't think them before.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who can remember a world before Facebook and who has ever wondered how if so much has changed in the near past, how much will change in the near future. This book also be a terrific gift for anyone with the slightest interest in what the future may hold ... from the serious techie to the casual sci-fi fan. Highly recommended.

The technological singularity, by one definition, is a singular, near-future phenomena in which the exponentially increasing pace of technological advancement will not be measured in functional human terms. Conversations with the Future is the compilation of some of Danaylov's most enlightening and provocative interviews about and related to the technological singularity. Topics range from industrial automation to artificial intelligence to radical life extension and much more. In my opinion, Danaylov is the best at what he does—asking the questions so that you may ponder and perhaps formulate your own answers. Highly recommended to everyone interested in the future.

A expertly revealed mystery !

The Drake House by Kelly Moran

I read interviews where the author of The Drake House claimed to never have written anything like this book previously. I still find that hard to believe. I don't doubt it, but Kelly Moran is an excellent author whom, I feel, after reading the advance copy, could write anything she sets her mind to.

The characters were believable and likable. All main characters were well formed and the plot extremely well laid out. Kelly kept me guessing who the villain was and just when I thought I had it figured out she switched it up. I didn't know until the end who it was. It didn't surprise me by then because it will be revealed in a way that only makes sense. But I didn't know either.

I loved Nick, the broken hero, instantly. I felt his pain and struggles and smiled as he fell in love and wasn't afraid to embrace the changes coming over him. I felt as surprised as he did as each wound healed. I rooted for Nick and Trisha even when they wanted to give up.

Trisha had secrets even she didn't know she had, and how they come out are fun and amusing, interestingly done and exciting. I cheered for her even when setting Nick in his place.

I think my favorite character was Brad, Trisha's bff since near infancy (not nice, Kelly). He reminds me of a character in a specific movie, whom I also connected with and adored. I can't tell you who or what movie without throwing out a spoiler, so I'll let you draw your own conclusions there.  Suffice it to say I love Brad.

The mystery throughout was done perfectly! Woven in a way I often found myself on the edge of my seat, sometimes literally, as new hints came to light. I will go back and look for more of Ms. Moran's books. She knows how to put words together that makes sense. The love scenes were tastefully written and I didn't feel the urge to skip a single word of this book, much less a page as often happens.

Thank you for an amusing and entertaining weekend, Ms. Moran. I needed it.

Thrilling, Chilling, Heart Stopping.

Nick was a big city cop, now a small town deputy. He thought the slower pace would help his mind heal. Almost immediately, he meets Trisha who runs the local orchard. He's drawn into the first murder the town has had in twenty years and a mystery that's even older.
Trisha is a strong and capable woman. She oversees a thriving business and a crew of men to work it. But, by night she's plagued by nightmares and sleepwalking. The only person willing and able to help is the new deputy from the city.
I love the way Kelly Moran uses her secondary characters to move this story at a fast pace. It has thrilling passion, chilling events and a heart stopping conclusion.

Suspenseful and romantic, amazing characters

A racy tale of compelling characters with backgrounds that will make you shiver. Not everything is quiet and content in the small town Small Rapids, Wisconsin where Nick runs to in order to escape a trouble past and guilty conscious.

After a deadly shooting harming more than Nick's victim, he only sees black and white, smells nothing and his taste buds seem to no longer exist. Not wanting to face the reasons why he takes on a job as a cop in this small town with small town crimes. And then he met Trisha and started seeing that his escape plan wasn't what he thought it would be.

The Drake House caught my attention from the very first page capturing a short scene that would make a lot more sense in the coming pages. Kelly Moran created these characters who existed in my life for a few weeks and I still wonder about now. I hope she'll continue their story to let her fans know how they made out with the decisions they made.

A haunted bed and breakfast, one less sleep walker, a miracle birth and a promise of success, The Drake House comes complete with suspense, romance, loved characters and two recipes for the best apple pie in the world! Make them both and you decide then come back and tell me why.

This tale makes me dream of living on an apple orchard too. A must read for anyone who loves suspense and romance!
