Collected Stories of Reynolds Price, by Reynolds Price

For over three decades, Reynolds Price has been one of America's most distinguished writers, in a career that has been remarkable both for its virtuosity and for the variety of literary forms he has embraced. Now he shows himself as much a master of the story as he is of the novel, in a volume that presents fifty stories, including two early collections - The Names and Faces of Heroes and Permanent Errors - as well as more than two dozen new stories that have never been gathered together before. In his introduction, Mr. Price explains how, after the publication of his first two collections, he wrote no new stories for almost twenty years. "But once I needed - for unknown reasons in a new and radically altered life - to return to the story, it opened before me like a new chance...A collection like this then, " he adds, ."..will show a writer's pre-occupations in ways the novel severely rations (novels are partly made for that purpose - the release from self, long flights through the Other). John Keats's assertion that 'the excellence of every Art is its intensity' has served as a license and standard for me. From the start my stories were driven by heat - passion and mystery, often passion for the mystery I've found in particular rooms and spaces and the people they threaten or shelter - and my general aim is the transfer of a spell of keen witness, perceived by the reader as warranted in character and act." There is, indeed, much for the reader to "witness" here of passion and mystery, of character and act. And the variety of stories - many of them set in Reynolds Price's native North Carolina, but a surprising number set in distant parts: Jerusalem in "An Early Christmas, " the American Southwest in "Walking Lessons, " and a number in Europe - will astonish even his most devoted readers. In short, The Collected Stories of Reynolds Price is as deeply rewarding a book as any he has yet published.

From Publishers Weekly
Indisputably one of our most masterly writers, Price ( Kate Vaiden ; Blue Calhoun ) bends to no literary fashion; he writes about unsung, ordinary people, lifting their lives out of anonymity. Of the 50 stories in this third collection of his short fiction, half are newly gathered; the rest come from collections published in 1963 and 1970. Many of the characters in these magical, quietly revelatory, death-obsessed tales are transformed by chance encounters, in settings that include Price's native south but also range throughout the world. "Walking Lessons" concerns a college teacher who comes to terms with his wife's suicide after assisting a dying Navajo woman on her reservation. In "An Early Christmas," a divorced American painter, a lapsed Catholic, sets off to attend Christmas mass in Bethlehem, where he finds a fresh perspective on his life and art through meetings with Palestinian Arabs in the occupied West Bank. The same generosity of spirit and penetrating insight that mark Price's novels infuse these unsparingly honest narratives. His characters grope almost blindly toward redemption, their earned epiphanies lifting them slightly closer to "the mind of God." Everywhere they stumble upon the abyss, whether as a tourist at the Dachau concentration camp ("A Fool's Education"); a man who kidnaps his granddaughter ("Toward Home"); or the (perhaps autobiographical) survivor of four spinal surgery operations steeled by the memory of a long dead cousin ("The Golden Child.") In nearly every story, Price's unflinching celebrations of life and death cut to the bone.

From Library Journal
The 50 stories in this massive volume include works from two much earlier collections ( The Names and Faces of Heros , LJ 6/15/63, and Permanent Errors , LJ 8/70), plus a number of unpublished or uncollected stories from later years. The author explains in a preface that for 20 years he concentrated on novels, including the award-winning Kate Vaiden ( LJ 12/86). The stories have a strong autobiographical lilt, depicting childhood in North Carolina and family relationships. Some of the family stories are dark and violent; in "Son," for instance, an abusive father tries to explain his failure as a parent to his son. Others are more wistfully nostalgic: "Uncle Grant" recalls the itinerant old black man who did yard work for a boy's family and was, for a time, his closest companion. All in all, a significant collection of American short fiction.

Good
By Cosmoetica
While reading Reynolds Price's The Collected Stories (culled from his two prior collections- The Names and Faces of Heroes and Permanent Errors- as well as new tales) it occurred to me that he was chiefly a proponent of the idea that it is better to have an ambition to excel rather than an ambition to acquire. Almost all of Price's protagonists seek to better themselves in the face of death, hardship, ignominy, or the like, yet few subscribe to the materialism that plagues his native land. Thus, he seems to come from an older time when this was the rule- not the exception, even though he was born in 1933, well into the Twentieth Century. In a sense, the best of his short stories, which is the bulk of the thirty-nine herein collected, are both a paean to that ideal, as well as an exemplary illustration of the classic difference between which sort of writing dominates a writer's mind- the intellectual and analytical, or the emotional and spiritual. Writers such as Richard Ford and William Trevor (whose Collected Stories I read alternating with Price's) are clearly in the former camp. They look at things, characters, and situations intently, placing emphasis on such to the point that often incisive soliloquies break out. Writers like Monica Wood or Edward P. Jones are clearly emotional writers foremost. This does not mean their stories lack intellect, just as Trevor's, nor Ford's, lack emotion, simply that emotion is the primal reason for their storytelling. Reynolds Price sits almost squarely on the fence between those two camps. He is a wonderfully evocative writer about the body, memory, death, and emotion, yet he can discourse with the best of them- and not in the pseudo-babbling of Postmodernists like a David Foster Wallace or Rick Moody, who cannot even masturbate well, much less carry a narrative. That said, his work might have the most enduring qualities of all the aforementioned writers.

The odd thing is that I first knew him as a bad poet- one whose early work showed potential, but whose later verse became stale and academic- as it now occupies a place on my shelf for prosists-cum-poetasters like John Updike, Evan S. Connell, Tennessee Williams, Eugene O'Neill, Raymond Carver, Edward Abbey, and Loren Eiseley. What amazes me is how people who are utterly devoid of originality and music in poetry can be so masterful in prose. The difference may be sharpest with Price. And the most clear-cut schism may be with a series of small prose pieces that are really mood pieces, and, as such, are really more accurately proems- and the equal of the best of a Georg Trakl or Rainer Maria Rilke. In fact, I would have put these pieces in with his Collected Poems, not Collected Stories....One of the best things about this Collected Stories is that it is a true book, not merely a compendium. The stories are put in a good order, with short tales allowing breathing space for the longer, richer tales. Too often, in de facto Best Of collections, the tales are poorly selected, and then put in seemingly random order. This book has purpose to it, and because of its form one cannot tell where the older and newer stories begin nor end. Yet, there is no schism, which is a tribute to Price's decades-long excellence. In the book's Introduction Price even states: `....all of them stand in a new order- one which attempts an alternation of voices, echoes, lengths and concerns that would prove unlikely if I held to the order of the prior volumes or set the stories by date of completion.' It's a smart choice, one too few writers and editors seem to understand, which also separates Price from lesser writers, and hurls him on toward something like greatness.

Some brilliant; some just plain disturbing
By Karen
I admit I haven't finished all the stories yet. I love Price's way with words and images. Many of the stories are brilliant in his masterful telling--he really evokes the people, places, and feelings for the reader. I guess that's why the really disturbing stories are so very disturbing. I stopped reading this book at night. That said, I do recommend the book--but with fair warning. Parts of it might trouble your mind and soul. Clearly, it's meant to do so and that's not necessarily bad. It's just not easy.

Extraordinary wisdom to help you understand yourself, lead your life and deal with other people.

"As human beings, we have instincts for both good and evil, conscious and unconscious. To rectify ourselves―to live spiritually and properly―involves getting a handle on these impulses."
―from the Introduction

In this special book of practical wisdom, Dr. Abraham J. Twerski draws from his extensive professional experience as a psychiatrist and spiritual counselor, a life-long student of Jewish wisdom texts, and his personal experience as a son of a wise Chassidic rabbi to give us practical lessons for life that we can put to day-to-day use in dealing with ourselves and others.

In a presentation as warm and witty as it is profound, Dr. Twerski combines lively anecdotes, personal musings and insights and wisdom from sources ranging from Freud to the great Talmudic and Torah scholars throughout the ages. And with deep compassion and refreshing candor, he shows how these wisdom teachings can guide us in all moments of our lives, whatever our faith tradition.

but I feel like if you want to read a short concise book ...
By Lee T.
First off let me say I am not Orthodox, I am not even close, but I feel like if you want to read a short concise book on thinking about the human relationship with a Higher Power this is a wonderful choice. I am not vastly educated in Torah study, Hebrew or anything else that you may assume that a reader of this book would know about- but I found this book easy to understand and very interesting.

A Formula for Proper Living
By Anna Clair
Dr. Twerski, once again, has provided us with insights from the Jewish religion as well as how the teachings are still applicable to living in the 21st century. After completing the book, I gave it to a dear friend who is passing it on to her friends. I feel so fortunate to be able to say that I have met Dr.Twerski and have had the extreme honor of hearing him speak. I have read his book, Do Unto Others, several times and reading it always provides inspiration and motivation to me. I give the book to all the special people I know. What else can I say? God Bless Dr.Twerski to all he has given me and all of his lifetime accomplishments for so many others.

Excellent
By Camelia
Wonderful book. It is very well written (like all rabbi Twerski's books), the concepts are deep but easy to understand. Comments and material are extremely useful and "doable" to put them in practice. It is a book that one can refer to often. And I love the fact that it is based on the Torah.

M Train, by Patti Smith

National Bestseller
Featuring a new postscript including five new photos from Patti Smith

From the National Book Award–winning author ofJust Kids: an unforgettable odyssey of a legendary artist, told through the cafs and haunts she has worked in around the world. It is a book Patti Smith has described as “a roadmap to my life.”

M Trainbegins in the tiny Greenwich Village caf where Smith goes every morning for black coffee, ruminates on the world as it is and the world as it was, and writes in her notebook. Through prose that shifts fluidly between dreams and reality, past and present, we travel to Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul in Mexico; to the fertile moon terrain of Iceland; to a ramshackle seaside bungalow in New York’s Far Rockaway that Smith acquires just before Hurricane Sandy hits; to the West 4th Street subway station, filled with the sounds of the Velvet Underground after the death of Lou Reed; and to the graves of Genet, Plath, Rimbaud, and Mishima.

Woven throughout are reflections on the writer’s craft and on artistic creation. Here, too, are singular memories of Smith’s life in Michigan and the irremediable loss of her husband, Fred Sonic Smith.

Braiding despair with hope and consolation, illustrated with her signature Polaroids,M Trainis a meditation on travel, detective shows, literature, and coffee. It is a powerful, deeply moving book by one of the most remarkable multiplatform artists at work today.

In 1965 I had come to New York City from South Jersey just to roam around, and nothing seemed more romantic than to write poetry in a Greenwich Village caf. I finally got the courage to enter Caff Dante on MacDougal Street. The walls were covered with printed murals of the city of Florence and scenes fromThe Divine Comedy.

A few years later I would sit by a low window that looked out into a small alley, reading Mrabet’sThe Beach Caf. A young fish-seller named Driss meets a reclusive, uncongenial codger who has a caf with only one table and one chair on a rocky stretch of shore near Tangier. The slow-moving atmosphere surrounding the caf captivated me. Like Driss, I dreamed of opening a place of my own: the Caf Nerval, a small haven where poets and travelers might find the simplicity of asylum.

I imagined threadbare Persian rugs on wide-planked floors, two long wood tables with benches, a few smaller tables, and an oven for baking bread. No music no menus. Just silence black coffee olive oil fresh mint brown bread. Photographs adorning the walls: a melancholic portrait of the caf’s namesake, and a smaller image of the forlorn poet Paul Verlaine in his overcoat, slumped before a glass of absinthe.

In 1978 I came into a little money and was able to pay a security deposit toward the lease of a one-story building on East Tenth Street. It had once been a beauty parlor but stood empty save for three white ceiling fans and a few folding chairs. My brother, Todd, and I whitewashed the walls and waxed the wood floors. Two wide skylights flooded the space with light. I spent several days sitting beneath them at a card table, drinking deli coffee and plotting my next move.

In the end I was obliged to abandon my caf. Two years before, I had met the musician Fred Sonic Smith in Detroit. It was an unexpected encounter that slowly altered the course of my life. My yearning for him permeated everything—my poems, my songs, my heart. We endured a parallel existence, shuttling back and forth between New York and Detroit, brief rendezvous that always ended in wrenching separations. Just as I was mapping out where to install a sink and a coffee machine, Fred implored me to come and live with him in Detroit. I said goodbye to New York City and the aspirations it contained. I packed what was most precious and left all else behind. I didn’t mind. The solitary hours I’d spent drinking coffee at the card table, awash in the radiance of my caf dream, were enough for me.

Some months before our first wedding anniversary Fred told me that if I promised to give him a child he would first take me anywhere in the world. I chose Saint-Laurent du Maroni, a border town in northwest French Guiana. I had long wished to see the remains of the French penal colony where hard-core criminals were once shipped before being transferred to Devil’s Island. InThe Thief’s Journal Jean Genet had written of Saint-Laurent as hallowed ground and of its inmates with devotional empathy. He had ascended the ladder toward them: reform school, petty thief, and three-time loser; but as he was sentenced, the prison he’d held in such reverence was closed, the last living inmates returned to France. Genet served his time in Fresnes Prison. Devastated, he wrote:I am shorn of my infamy.

At 70, Genet was reportedly in poor health and most likely would never go to Saint-Laurent himself. I envisioned bringing him its earth and stone. Though often amused by my quixotic notions, Fred did not make light of this self-imposed task. He agreed without argument. I wrote a letter to William Burroughs, whom I had known since my early 20s. William, close to Genet and possessing his own romantic sensibility, promised to assist me in delivering the stones.

Preparing for our trip, Fred and I spent our days in the Detroit Public Library studying the history of Suriname and French Guiana. Fred bought maps, khaki clothing, traveler’s checks, and a compass; cut his long, lank hair; and bought a French dictionary. When he embraced an idea he looked at things from every angle. He did not read Genet, however. He left that up to me.

We flew on a Sunday to Miami and stayed for two nights in a roadside motel. We ate red beans and yellow rice in Little Havana and visited Crocodile World. The short stay readied us for the extreme heat we were about to face. In Grenada and Haiti, all passengers had to deplane while the hold was searched for smuggled goods. We finally landed in Suriname at dawn; a handful of young soldiers armed with automatic weapons waited as we were herded into a bus that transported us to a vetted hotel. The first anniversary of the 1980 military coup that overthrew the democratic government was looming: an anniversary just days before our own.

After a few days bending in the heat of the capital city of Paramaribo, a guide drove us 150 kilometers to the town of Albina on the west bank of the Maroni River bordering French Guiana. The pink sky was veined in lightning. Our guide found a young boy who agreed to take us across by pirogue, a long dugout canoe. We pushed off in a light rain that swiftly escalated into a torrential downpour. The boy handed me an umbrella and warned us not to trail our fingers in the water. I suddenly noticed the river teeming with tiny black fish. Piranha! He laughed as I quickly withdrew my hand.

In an hour or so the boy dropped us off at the foot of a muddy embankment. He dragged his pirogue onto land and joined some workers beneath a length of black oilcloth stretched over four wooden posts. They seemed amused by our momentary confusion and pointed us in the direction of the main road. As we struggled up a slippery knoll, the calypso beat of Mighty Swallow’s “Soca Dance” wafted from a boom box. We tramped through the empty town, finally taking cover in a bar. Two men were drinking Calvados. Fred engaged in a broken French-English conversation with a leathery-skinned fellow who presided over the nearby turtle reserves. As the rains subsided, the owner of the local hotel appeared, offering his services. Then a younger, sulkier version emerged to take our bags, and we followed them along a muddied trail down a hill to our lodgings. We had not even booked a hotel and yet a room awaited us.

The Htel Galibi was spartan yet comfortable. A small bottle of watered-down cognac and two plastic cups were set on the dresser. Spent, we slept, even as the returning rain beat relentlessly upon the corrugated tin roof. The morning sun was strong. I left our clothes to dry on the patio and spread the contents of our pockets on a small table: damp receipts, dismembered fruits, Fred’s ever-present guitar picks.

Around noon a cement worker drove us outside the ruins of the Saint-Laurent prison. There were a few stray chickens scratching in the dirt and an overturned bicycle, but no one seemed to be around. Our driver entered with us through a low stone archway and then just slipped away. The compound had the air of a tragically defunct boomtown. Fred and I moved about in alchemical silence, mindful not to disturb the reigning spirits.

In search of the right stones, I entered the solitary cells, examining the faded graffiti tattooing the walls. Hairy balls, cocks with wings, the prime organ of Genet’s angels. Not here, I thought. I looked around for Fred. He had found a small graveyard. I saw him paused before a headstone that read, “Son your mother is praying for you.” He stood there for a long time looking up at the sky. I left him alone and inspected the outbuildings, finally choosing the earthen floor of the mass cell to gather the stones. It was a dank place the size of a small airplane hangar. Heavy, rusted chains were anchored into the walls illuminated by slim shafts of light. Yet there was still some scent of life: manure, earth, and an array of scuttling beetles.

I dug a few inches seeking stones that might have been pressed by the hard-calloused feet of the inmates or the soles of heavy boots worn by the guards. I carefully chose three and put them in an oversize Gitanes matchbox, leaving the bits of earth clinging to them. Fred offered his handkerchief to wipe the dirt from my hands and then made a little sack for the matchbox. He placed it in my hands, the first step toward placing them in the hands of Genet.

We didn’t stay long in Saint-Laurent. We went seaside but the turtle reserves were off-limits, as they were spawning. Fred spent a lot of time in the bar, talking to the fellows. The men seemed to respect him, regarding him without irony. He had that effect on other men. I was content just sitting on a crate outside the bar staring down an empty street I had never seen and might never see again.

For the most part I kept to myself. Occasionally I caught glimpses of the maid, a barefoot girl with long, dark hair. She smiled and gestured but spoke no English. She tidied our room and washed our clothes. In gratitude I gave her one of my bracelets, a gold chain with a four-leaf clover, which I saw dangling from her wrist as we departed.

There was no rail service in French Guiana. The fellow from the bar had found us a driver, who carried himself like an extra inThe Harder They Comewith a cocked cap, aviator sunglasses, and a leopard-print shirt. We arranged a price and he agreed to drive us the 268 kilometers to Cayenne. He insisted our bags stay with him in the front seat of his beat-up tan Peugeot as chickens were normally transported in the trunk. We drove along Route Nationale, listening to reggae on a station riddled with static.

Every once in a while I untied the handkerchief to look at the Gitanes matchbox with its silhouette of a Gypsy posturing with her tambourine in a swirl of indigo-tinged smoke. But I did not open it. I pictured a small yet triumphal moment passing the stones to Genet. Fred held my hand as we wound through dense forests and passed short, sturdy Amerindians balancing iguanas squarely on their heads. We traveled through a tiny commune that had just a few houses and one six-foot crucifix. We asked the driver to stop. He got out and examined his tires. Fred took a photograph of the sign that read “Tonate. Population 9,” and I said a little prayer.

The primary mission accomplished, we had no ultimate destination; we were free. But as we approached Kourou we sensed a shift. We were entering a military zone and hit a checkpoint. The driver’s identity card was inspected and after an interminable stretch of silence we were ordered to get out of the car. Two officers searched the front and back seats, finding a switchblade with a broken spring in the glove box. That can’t be so bad, I thought, but as they knocked on the trunk our driver became markedly agitated. Dead chickens? Maybe drugs. They circled around the car, and then asked him for the keys. He threw them in a shallow ravine and bolted but was swiftly wrestled to the ground. I glanced sidelong at Fred. He betrayed no emotion and I followed his lead.

They opened the trunk. Inside was a man who looked to be in his early 30s curled up like a slug in a rusting conch shell. He seemed terrified as they poked him with a rifle and ordered him to get out. We were all herded to the police headquarters, put in separate rooms, and interrogated in French. The commander arrived, and we were brought before him. He was barrel-chested with dark, sad eyes and a thick mustache that dominated his careworn face. Fred quickly took stock of things. I slipped into the role of compliant female, for in this obscure annex of the Foreign Legion it was definitely a man’s world. I watched silently as the human contraband, stripped and shackled, was led away. Fred was ordered into the commander’s office. He turned and looked at me. stay calm was the message telegraphed from his pale blue eyes.

An officer brought in our bags, and another wearing white gloves went through everything. I sat holding the handkerchief, relieved I was not asked to surrender it. An interrogator brought me a black coffee on an oval tray with an inlay of a blue butterfly and entered the commander’s office. I could see Fred’s profile. After a time they all came out. They seemed in amiable spirits. The commander gave Fred a manly embrace and we were placed in a private car. Neither of us said a word as we pulled into the capital city of Cayenne. Fred had the address of a hotel given to him by the commander. We were dropped off at the foot of a hill. It’s somewhere up there, the driver motioned, and we carried our bags up the stone steps.

—What did you two talk about? I asked.

—I really can’t say for sure, he only spoke French.

—How did you communicate?

—Cognac.

Fred seemed deep in thought.

—I know that you are concerned about the fate of the driver, he said, but it’s out of our hands. He placed us in real jeopardy and in the end my concern was for you.

—Oh, I wasn’t afraid.

—Yes, he said, that’s why I was concerned.

The hotel was to our liking. We drank French brandy from a paper sack and slept wrapped in layers of mosquito netting. In the morning we explored Cayenne. It was Carnival time, and the city was all but deserted. Overcrowded ferries departed for Devil’s Island. Calypso music poured from a mammoth disco in the shape of an armadillo. There were a few small souvenir stands with identical fare: thin, red blankets made in China and metallic blue raincoats. But mostly there were lighters, all kinds of lighters, with images of parrots, spaceships, and men of the Foreign Legion. There was nothing much to keep one there, yet we stayed in Cayenne until our anniversary as if bewitched.

On our last Sunday, women in bright dresses and men in top hats were celebrating the end of Carnival. Following their makeshift parade on foot, we ended up at Rmire-Montjoly, a commune southeast of the city. The revelers dispersed. Fred and I stood mesmerized by the emptiness of the long, sweeping beaches. It was a perfect day for our anniversary and I couldn’t help thinking it was the perfect spot for a beach caf. Fred went on before me, whistling to a black dog somewhat up ahead. There was no sign of his master. Fred threw a stick into the water and the dog fetched it. I knelt down in the sand and sketched out plans for an imaginary caf with my finger.

A good friend encouraged me to continue
By L.K.
I almost stopped halfway through. A good friend encouraged me to continue. "It gets better," she said. I continued because of that and because I have loved and respected Patti Smith's music and poetry since I was in my mid-teens. I was a charter member of her fan club in the mid-'70s. I also feel it's my responsibility as a committed reader to finish a book that's been written with grit and authenticity.

It got a little better, but I continued to feel like I didn't really know where she was or who she was talking about a lot of the time. There were a number of paragraphs I had to read over and over again to track where we were: the equivalent of talking to someone who's speaking almost inaudibly or with a thick, unusual accent. I felt like I was squinting my eyes and craning my neck to track her conversation.

There's no doubt of her being a brilliant wordsmith and poet, and that she has shared her grief in a poetic and deep way.

At the end of the story, I was disappointed that after all the poignant mentions about her husband Fred and after I, the reader, proving my interest and investment by hanging in there till the end of the book she doesn't share with us what happened. I felt let down.

To assuage my disappointment, I googled Fred Smith and learned this (which helped me to have completion):

"In 1976, firebrand rock poetess Patti Smith visited Detroit while touring behind her album Radio Ethiopia, and was introduced to Fred Sonic Smith at a party held at Lafayette Coney Island, one of the city's most celebrated hot dog stands. While Fred Smith was married at the time, he and Patti immediately hit it off, and before long a low-key romance blossomed between them. By 1978, Fredwas once again single, and he and Patti were free to go public with their relationship. In 1980, Fredand Patti were married; Sonic's Rendezvous Band had recently broken up, and after a calamitous European tour following the release of her album, Wave, Patti opted to retire from touring. The couple moved to St. Clair Shores, a suburb of Detroit, and quietly settled down to raise a son and a daughter away from the media spotlight and the rigors of a musician's life. Both Patti and Fred continued to write music together, and in 1986, Patti came out of retirement to record the album Dream of Life. Fred wrote much of the material in collaboration with Patti, played guitar on the album, and helped to produce the sessions. In a 1996 interview, Patti said, "Dream of Life was really more Fred's record -- it was all Fred's music, Fred's philosophy." Though it featured the anthemic "People Have the Power," a song that would become a highlight of Patti's live shows, Dream of Life failed to find an audience, despite strong reviews. Sadly, it would prove to be one of Fred's last major projects. In the late '80s, his health went into decline, and on November 9, 1994, Fred Sonic Smith died of heart failure in a Detroit hospital -- ironically, the same malady that took the life of MC5 vocalist Rob Tyner two years earlier." [http://www.allmusic.com/artist/fred-sonic-smith-mn0000176087]

Ultimately, I felt that while Patti has shared deep, intrapsychic treasure with us, she isn't intimate or relational with us, her readers.

There was depth, and there was great, though vague, beauty. A lot of literary name-dropping, and her deepest relationships in the story appear to be with the dead or with inanimate objects (a coat, stones, coffee). I'll be pondering this one for a while.

All of that said, Patti Smith is a deep, unique artist in a soul-less age. For that, I am deeply grateful.

More of Patti Smith to Savor
By Holly W.S.
Another delicate and quiet memoir to savor by a mind and heart like no other. While 'Just Kids' traced her coming of age as an artist, this memoir shows us the far more hidden, interior life of someone keenly attuned to her experience in the world, her dreams, her memories, and what it all means to her as a wife, mother, artist and human. I really enjoyed this book, and will likely reread it before too long.

It's not what she writes but how.
By MadDog2020
What sort of book is this? Nothing like "Just Kids." It’s not exactly a memoir and certainly not an autobiography. I’d say more than anything it’s a journal—some entries deal with recent events, some with events in the author’s earlier life, and some describe her fantasies and dream life. So, what’s it about? Certain themes occur and recur here—coffee, fascination with television police procedurals, foreign travel, and grief. The entries describe the life of an aging widow who lives alone with cats. The distinguishing traits of this person’s journal and why it’s eminently worth reading are her renown as a godmother of punk rock and, even more importantly, her tremendous facility with the written word. Furthermore, what kept me immersed in this journal were her descriptions of the books she’s read and re-read, many of which I feel we’ve shared.

Comments on "A Kabbalistic Universe"
By Bobak
I have read many books on the Kabbalah. A Kabbalistic Universe is probably the best one amongst all the ones I have read. It is easy to understand and at the same time it is adequately detailed. Thank you Z'ev Ben Shimon for writing it and thank you Dr. Mitra Makbouleh for recommending it. Of course it is not a book that can be retained with one reading and I plan to read it several times, but it is very pleasant reading.

Kabbalah for beginners...
By Kabbalah enthusiast
This book is fantastic! It is very accessible to a beginner but still retains the complexity that naturally comes with outlining Kabbalah. Highly recommended. I didn't purchase my own copy off of Amazon because I was lucky to find one for very cheap elsewhere but the book is definitely worth purchasing.

Not a book to take lightly
By Kim / Chicago girl
Someone had recommended this book to me last year. I hesitated about buying it because the sugbject of Kabbala has, thanks to Madonna, gotten a bit commercial over the years. There is nothing commercial or frivolous about this book. It's not a quick read, that's for sure. You read a few pages and you put it down and think. Love, love, love this book. Will re-read it after I finish the five other books I'm reading.

Maxwell's Equations, by Paul G. Huray

An authoritative view of Maxwell's Equations that takes theory to practice

Maxwell's Equations is a practical guide to one of the most remarkable sets of equations ever devised. Professor Paul Huray presents techniques that show the reader how to obtain analytic solutions for Maxwell's equations for ideal materials and boundary conditions. These solutions are then used as a benchmark for solving real-world problems. Coverage includes:

  • An historical overview of electromagnetic concepts before Maxwell and how we define fundamental units and universal constants today

  • A review of vector analysis and vector operations of scalar, vector, and tensor products

  • Electrostatic fields and the interaction of those fields with dielectric materials and good conductors

  • A method for solving electrostatic problems through the use of Poisson's and Laplace's equations and Green's function

  • Electrical resistance and power dissipation; superconductivity from an experimental perspective; and the equation of continuity

  • An introduction to magnetism from the experimental inverse square of the Biot-Savart law so that Maxwell's magnetic flux equations can be deduced

Maxwell's Equations serves as an ideal textbook for undergraduate students in junior/senior electromagnetics courses and graduate students, as well as a resource for electrical engineers.

Review

“This is a very useful and pedagogically well-written book which covers subjects of nonrela-tivistic electro-magnetism
from its initial historical beginnings to modern theoretical concepts and various technological applications.” (Zentralblatt MATH,1 December 2012)

About the Author
Paul G. Huray is Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of South Carolina where he has taught courses in engineering physics, electromagnetics, signal integrity, the mathematical methods of physics, advanced thermodynamics, and computer communications. Professor Huray introduced the first electromagnetics course to focus on signal integrity, and that program has produced more than eighty practicing signal integrity engineers now employed in academia, industry, and government. He earned his PhD in physics at the University of Tennessee in 1968, conducted research in the Solid State, Chemistry and Physics Divisions at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and has worked part-time for the Intel Corporation in developing the physical basis for barriers to circuits with bit rates up to 100 GHz. He has also worked at the Centre d'tudes Nuclaires de Grenoble, at Technische Universitt Wien, and at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Likely written for a PHD/Postdoc student rather than for a undergraduate student
By Potato Monger
The book is highly detailed on most of the math involved with Maxwell's equations. However, this doesn't seem to be a decent book for most undergraduate students to reference. The math is advanced, it requires previous knowledge of the topic, and on a few parts, the author seems to stumble on about how students fail to understand various aspects of this topic that are not really covered in detail in the book. In short, if you are a postdoc/phd student who needs reference material on electromagnetics, this book is for you. If you are a undergraduate student looking for a basic tutorial on electromagnetics, this book is not likely for you.

Not very impressed
By Heather and Dave
This book is very small compared to what it looked like in the pictures. The information is basic and ok for someone who is wanting to learn some basic stuff about mythology but no more. I am not really that impressed with the amount of information that was presented in this. I guess it would be ok for a middle school child who does not already have the basic knowledge of Mythology.
