About the Author
Dr. A.C. "Buddy" Krizan is professor emeritus in the College of Business and Public Affairs at Murray State University. Formerly, he served as assistant dean, department chair, and professor in the College of Business and Public Affairs. He began teaching business communication courses, seminars, and workshops in 1977. He has conducted research on a variety of topics including basic business communication, resume content, visual aids, proposals, and written and oral messages. He has served in leadership positions for national, state, and local professional organizations. Buddy has made presentations at numerous professional conferences and has published in many professional journals.

Dr. Pat Merrier is a professor in the Finance and Management Information Sciences Department at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She has over 30 years of secondary and post-secondary teaching experience; business communication has been a part of her teaching assignment for 30 years. Pat has served in a variety of leadership roles within campus, community, and professional associations. Assistant Academic Vice Chancellor, Acting Athletic Director, union president, and NCBEA president are among the posts she has held. Noted for her practical approach to business communication, Pat frequently conducts seminars for local business professionals. In recent years, she's gravitated toward collaborative, interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Joyce Logan is an associate professor emeritus in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. She has taught business courses at the high school and university levels and has been a member of NBEA for over 25 years. Having worked in teaching and administrative positions for 50 years, Joyce recently retired as a faculty member in the principal preparation and doctoral programs for school leaders. Other experiences in education include school principal, regional coordinator of vocational education, school services director for the Kentucky Department of Education, office head for the Kentucky Tech system, and field coordinator for the American Council on Education. She has conducted research and presented in business and areas such as Tech Prep, adult education, and technology, as well as school leadership.

Karen Schneiter Williams has been teaching computer technology, business communication, and administrative management courses for over 20 years. Since 1999 she has been at San Diego Mesa College, where she served as chair for the Computer Business Technology Department and on several campus and district committees. Throughout her teaching career, she has been active in her profession. She has presented at state, regional, national, and international conferences as well as at many teacher training workshops. She is currently President of the National Business Education Association (NBEA). She has served as chair of NBEA's Curriculum Administrative Committee, which has responsibility for the revision and publication of the National Standards for Business Education, What America's Students Should Know and Be Able to Do in Business and as a member of the Executive Board for the Association for Business Communication. She is currently serving as the Content Advisor for the Insights program hosted by Hugh Downs and distributed for Public Television. In 2005, she was named Outstanding Postsecondary Business Educator of the Year by the National Business Education Association. Karen has also worked in the business world for approximately 15 years in a variety of sales, marketing, and management positions.

Back of the Book worth the price...

The text is written simply without being insulting. The resources were great, reminded me of the lessons learned in high school. We are conditioned to allow spell check and grammar check to think for us. Punctuation seminar was invaluable and it has improved my work related writing. The text is based upon reality, provides real-life examples.

This was the textbook required for my Business Communication class...we seldom used it, and when we did, quite often the teacher disagreed with it. It's a good "baseline" book, but for those who already know the basics, I wouldn't recommend it.

Expensive, Verbose, and Inferior to its competitors

First let me begin by saying that I have no relationship to the authors of this text, I was not a former graduate student of their's nor do I have any particular axe to grind. The same can not be said of many of the recent spate of five star reviewers, many of whom are former graduate students of the authors in question and whose objectivity is highly questionable, given the widespread nepotism endemic in public education. Furthermore, I will only be reviewing the Mechanics portion of Etkina's text, I will expand on the other components of the text as time goes on. The redesign of the algebra/trig based Physics put Etkina's text along with Knight's College Physics, front and center as the effective textbooks of choice by the College Board. While I am not using this text in my classroom, I am reading and assessing the text for potential future adoption for which is the purpose of this review.

Writing an introductory physics text is an art. On the one hand the author has to strike a balance between explaining the material as thoroughly as possible. On the other hand the author must weigh the patience of their audience, late teens who could care less about the details and 'learn what they need to know'. Judging on the content in Mechanics alone, Etkina's book is a full 20% longer than most Introductory Physics texts and is very text heavy.

The strength of Etkina's book is in the details, where painstaking effort is spent on showing various representations of the material, especially early on. However, one gets the impression from reading the text that all representations stand on equal footing, when the reality is that if one goes beyond the introductory level of physics, it is the mathematical representation that is primary. The inclusion of derivations of many key results is commendable and demonstrates that the authors properly place a value in the importance of deriving results.

Another strength is the inclusion of details that serve as interesting reading for physics teachers who already have a strong attachment to the material, like how Newton formulated his theory of Gravitation. At the same time, this is probably material that is best left in the appendix of the Student Edition or the Teacher's Edition. This allows teachers to decide whether or not to include this into their repertoire and for interested students to investigate further. Which is one of my gripes with this text; it tries too hard to be a textbook, lecturer and lab instructor. This is not the point of a textbook, and it will undoubtedly make it an exhausting read for first year physics students. I know from experience that it is a struggle to get my students to read even a short textbook. I honestly can not imagine them trudging through this tome.

In general, I find the problems to be a bit routine, verbose and in some cases detached from the mindset of first year students; for ex. "Design, perform and analyze the results of an experiment to determine the coefficient of static and kinetic friction between a penny and the cover of a text book." This is extraordinarily difficult for students to do, they do not have enough experience either with equipment or physics to actually construct experiments, much less for homework. Alongside this is the the near complete omission of derivation style problems, whose difficulty tend to lay in between the routine problems and open-ended inquiry based problems. Derivation problem types help bridge the difficulty and their omission is a serious issue for students who want to take the next level of physics.

In terms of raw content, I find the Work and Energy to be the most problematic. First, there is no definition or distinction between conservative and non-conservative forces so the theoretical basis of the conservation of mechanical energy is basically taken as a postulate. Second, the construction of potential energy functions are done incorrectly, as a result it is possible for students to draw some very bad conclusions based upon their derivations. For instance, it can be easily shown using their derivation technique that the force of friction has a potential energy function-which is fundamentally wrong. The important Work Energy theorem is effectively removed from the chapter and F vs. x graphs are de-emphasized. Instead we get Energy bar charts, which are useful but also a bit trivial and does not scale beyond a first year course. Lastly, the gravitational potential energy function for general gravitation is given without proof, which is common but not necessary. A geometric/algebraic proof utilizing the area under the force vs position curve should be included in the appendix.

Another issue I have with the text is that it goes into exhaustive detail of the bodies associated each force F(A on B) and then sloppily adopts an alphabet soup for notation of force types, f for friction, N for normal, T for tension, but then excludes gravity. While I learned physics using this alphabet soup, many authors have since moved on and for good reason. It is much more clear to use F to first indicate that it is a force and subscript to indicate the type of force and if necessary use parenthesis for the bodies in the subscript.

Last but not least, it would be a great error for a teacher to evaluate a textbook without evaluating the supplemental materials that accompany it. This is probably the area of greatest weakness with the Etkina text. First the Active Learning Guide is far too expensive and its purpose is too vague for either students or school districts. Are another 200 pages of text required to explain the underlying physics? Should the problems in the Active Learning Guide simply been included in the end of chapter problems of the textbook? The creation of the Active Learning Guide predates the textbook and it appears that the authors did not want to let it go and instead have chosen redundancy. The test materials and clicker questions are nowhere near the standard of other textbooks: Giancoli, Young, Serway etc.
When taken as a whole, I feel that it is a good starting point for a text but that there was not sufficient editorial oversight. Furthermore, the authors, publisher and the College Board should be more conscious of the cost of this text and its supplemental materials. When I consider the deficiencies of the textbook, the lackluster supplemental materials and the cost, I will not be adopting the text.

The book sets the baseline for the area, and is readable too

If you believe that image sensor technology will continue to be developed concerning size, spatial resolution, measurement accuracy etc, you will have to ask yourself how the increased data volume should be understood, visualized and analysed. The short story on Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) is that number crunching algorithms are available for data reduction, but the focus is on visualization and the application problem. You will depend on the human ability to explore and iteratively identify the problem, and the ability of the eye-brain to identify relevant information in the visualizations used. I admit that I am a supporter of this strategy.
The book starts out with introducing imaging, images, image operations etc. The authors are well aware that this introduction can not replace the vast literature in the area, it has to be basic, but it is well done. It is interesting to note that the necessity of knowing the characteristics of the image (depending on sensor technology) and the (imaging) experiment is better described here than in conventional image processing literature. A good analysis depend on these factors, right? The main application area magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is described, but of course it becomes basic too. The used algorithm is principal component analysis (PCA). It is well described, using theory, examples and graphics. I especially appreciate the chapter on pre-processing techniques, with coupling to image and experiment characteristics.
After these introductions, it is time for MIA. The corner stones of MIA; visualisations, data reduction and iterative model work, are described and used in many examples. To be more specific, local models can be created, different matrices can be used, residuals are analysed, a multitude of visualizations are used, and the examples cover many applications (some are a little strange, for example hard bread (kn„ckebr"d)). The main example is an MRI example. The result is a segmentation, or an understanding of the data which helps in further experiments.
The book includes many examples and also high level language code, so it is possible to understand everything in depth if desirable. My own experience is that MIA is quite multi-disciplinary, it demands several experts (sensor technology, image processing, possibly statistics and especially the application expert!) to be successful. Without no do doubt, the book fills the role of creating a common platform for any such project. This book is to my knowledge the only dedicated one presently. There is an historical overview of work in the area which I appreciate very much. The references are adequate, and there are pointers to relevant journals.
Unfortunately, the book can not escape two crucial questions for MIA: What software should be used? After reading about MIA, I would expect a chapter on software. Just think of all the visualisation needed, and what you would like to have in the future. To write your own software would be a never ending project, I know, I have done it. What does the created images show? This is the curse of PCA (and factor analysis in general). Any application expert would wonder, and it therefore becomes a crucial question. The only way I know (and used) to explain this is to use synthetic data, of which you have control, and it is a good exercise to model the image characteristics. This approach is not used, and I can understand that. It puts even more demands on the used software.

This is a must-use for any middle school classroom!

This true story written from the perspective of an 11-year-old immigrant, truly sums up the immigrant perspective. My 4th grade students, journaled each day as if he or she were the central character, and begged for each of the five chapters. This book alone, replaced a 4-week unit that I had used previously to emphasize the impact of immigration on our state. Written by the author's daughter, with photos showing then and now, it is wonderful. FYI: We used, as the final journal entry, an account written by Yehuda when he finds his journal 70 years later and recounts the years since arriving in America.

Character traits nicely parallel our school's program.

The story reads well for any student needing to understand the trials and tribulations of people immigrating to the U.S.Important character traits are developed and their importance in reaching a goal are emphasized. The artwork makes a dramatic statement to anyone who opens the book. Elementary students should be attracted by this outstanding feature. As a school director and recently retired teacher, I purchased a copy for each of our elementary libraries because of the qualiy of this book.

Great book for all ages!

This review is from Debbie,Paul,Ryan and Melissa. We all modelled for the illustrator,Laurie McGaw, of this book. It was a wonderful experience since some of our grandparents left Russia and Poland because of the war and we felt we could relate to the people in the book.The book has been presented to the our childrens' school in conjunction with the Holocaust unit. Teachers and kids alike found the book to be very interesting and beautifully illustrated. We recommend it to all nationalities and ages.It is not only a book about Jewish people, but also a book about what any immigrants coming to North America might have experienced.

Don't buy it

I had to buy this book for a class. I was very disappointed.

This edition has several typos and mistakes on the tables. The examples and problems sections are really irritating, sometimes they show a couple of equations and write 5 problems over the same equation over and over again, and I have found instances where the "answers to selected problems" section show incorrect information. There is very little physics that you can learn from those problems.

It seems that it is hard to find good books on Medical Imaging, but I highly recommend "The essential physics of medical imaging" (Bushberg. et al.) This is a very good review of the imaging techniques but it is not very quantitative. A more quantitative book I would recommend is "Medical Imaging: signals and systems" by Jerry L. Price.

If you have an option, don't waste your money on this book.

This text is excellent for Medical Physicists preparing for the first part of their ABR or ABMP exam. This book is also a very good text for teaching Radiology Residents. Radiology Residents currently (4/12/03), do not use calculators for their ABR exam therefore they do not need to know most of the calculations that are presented in this text. The chapter on Radiation Detectors is an excellent primer for medical physicists, health physicists and Biomedical engineers. My only criticism of the text is that the QA recommendations are not current and the MRI section does not address image quality enough detail.

It's old, but still very good.

This was my first medical imaging book and I found it very easy to follow. It's getting a bit long in the tooth at this stage but it's a book where if you start from page 1 it will give you an excellent grounding in medical imaging physics and will allow you to explorer more advanced and newer avenues. Yes it is in black&white but it is also very concise and easy to follow. I definitely would recommend it to a physics student trying to learn about medical imaging for the first time.

It's about programming, not javascript.

This is book is phenomenal - the best book on programming I've ever read. But it's important to note: it's about programming. The programming just happens to be in in Javascript. If you are looking to learn a few JS commands for your website, this is probably not the right book.

Contrary to the other reviews, Eloquent Javascript is for beginners. This can been seen in Chapter 1... it starts with the number "13". Then goes to arithmetic with "100 + 4 * 11", then boolean "3 > 2". Definitely for beginners.

No, the code examples are not superficial. It's similar to Zed Shaw's exercises in Learn Python the Hard Way - they are specially crafted to teach you something. You should type out the examples on your computer, write comments on what each line does, download the data files from the website, and get the examples to run.

The author put this quote in the introduction:
"I do not enlighten those who are not eager to learn, nor arouse those who are not anxious to give an explanation themselves. If I have presented one corner of the square and they cannot come back to me with the other three, I should not go over the points again." -Confucius

The reason I like Eloquent Javascript so much is that, unlike textbooks, it is written in an easy-going manner, like he's talking to you. Each example builds on previous examples, each chapter builds on the previous chapters. Slowly building up your knowledge. Sometimes without me realizing how much I'm learning.

An example is functional programming. I never understood it or the hype. I read many articles and discussion forums, but I never really got it. In Chapter 5, Higher-Order Functions, the author doesn't even mention the buzz-words "functional programming". He simply starts off with the typical for-loop to print each item in an array. Then he shows how the for-loop can be enclosed in a function. Then he modifies the function so it can take in generic actions instead of just printing - a function that takes another function as input. For practice with functions on functions, you create a few more: filter, map, reduce... BAM! it all hits me. With the stuff I learnt in Chapter 3, I now know the benefits of no-side effects, limiting scope, recursion, and leaving the original data alone. I see why stringing small functions together allows more flexibility than a long recipe of for-loops. I see why functions allow you to follow the data being manipulated more clearly. I finally get it.

The funny thing is, the book isn't even that "deep". After all, it's actually a programming book where he walks you through code examples, not a conceptual computer science book. It's odd how concepts just come to you - that's how eloquent the book actually is.

A book with detailed but challenging examples

After going through this book, I think this book is rather suitable for people with some familiarity with programming than for someone who is new to programming.

As a programming student myself, the book covers important foundations of JavaScript in detail but I have to agree with another review that the examples are difficult to follow. The examples demonstrate how powerful the concept can be, but as a textbook intended to introduce people to programming, the examples can become difficult to comprehend. It's like telling a child to build a Death Star out of legos after teaching them how lego blocks can be attached together (I'm exaggerating but you get the gist). Otherwise, the book offers a strong foundation in every concept you need to learn (No wonder one of the top JavaScript-oriented bootcamps recommends this book). The book's exercise problems are very helpful getting familiar with JavaScript once you master them, and your JavaScript discipline will be great. It will take you a while if this book is the only source , so I recommend combine this book with another source (e.g. JavascriptIsSexy, Mozilla MDN, The Definitive Guide, etc). The author is definitely coming from a programmer's perspective when he's explaining JS concepts. But in order for the book to be an effective textbook, the book should be written from the reader's perspective & that's where the book falls short. It's understandable in a way, because the author is an expert in programming and lives, eats, and sleeps with programming, which may be why the book can't translate concepts to the intended audience who know virtually nothing about programming.

The book's flow is similar to a narrative. Sometimes, it can get weird and confusing (i.e. one of the many reasons the author confuses you). BUT, it attempts to introduce the concepts by illustrating how it can be utilized in real applications (the real-application explanations are really really great. it's one of the best, but it will take you forever to know what's going on).

It was fun read in a way. It was difficult, too... So use another source to understand JavaScript and attempt this book's exercises. They will stimulate your brain and probably increase your IQ (your brain will thank you). projecteuler,coderbyte, codewars are good places for exercises (try coderbyte first, then move onto codewars, then projecteuler).

GREAT book, but VERY challenging for a beginning programmer.

It was really hard to pick the right amount of stars for this book. If you were to ask many Javascript programmers for a list of the essential books to read in order to become proficient at Javascript, then you'll find this one coming up quite often. When it comes to introducing you to all (or at least most) of the essential key concepts of Javascript programming, this is one of the best. As a beginner book, it unfortunately fails. Some here will say that it never specifies that it is trying to be a beginner book, but if you read the first 2 or 3 chapters, it is very clear that it is. It starts off with VERY basic programming concepts and exercises that any beginner can follow.

However, things soon start to ramp up VERY quickly. The book will briefly introduce you to an important concept, and then quickly move on, using that concept throughout the rest of the book, failing to ensure that the concept was sufficiently solidified in the mind of the reader. You simply can't use this book as a stand-alone resource for learning Javascript programming in general.

With all of the above negativity, why would I still give this book 4 stars? Well, as mentioned above, it is still a great book for covering all of the essentials of js programming. If you are an experienced programmer, and are now ready to learn the Javascript language, this is a great book for learning the key concepts. There are some challenging exercises that a veteran will be able to handle quite well. Heck, even if you have learned most of the basic Javascript syntax (language rules), then you might be ready to slog through this book. If you can complete most of the exercises in the book quickly and effectively, then you will (in my opinion) have the necessary skills to be able to communicate effectively with JS professionals.

However, if you are just now learning to program, and starting with Javascript (an awesome language to start with too!), then my two recommendations are 1. A Smarter Way to Learn Javascript, and 2. Head First Javascript. (MAKE SURE YOU GET THE LATEST VERSIONS!) Right now, when it comes to premier books that use the latest in teaching techniques to take you from a beginner to intermediate, these are the books I would recommend to someone just starting out.

Whatever your decision is, if you choose to get this book: DO NOT SKIP OUT ON THE EXERCISES. They are challenging, but really good. Practice them over and over again until you understand what you are doing and why, then review the chapter again to collect anything else that you didn't pick up before. THEN move on to the next chapter. This is important because each chapter builds on what has already been discussed. (this doesn't apply to the chapter on Regular Expressions though. Don't feel guilty if you have to skip that one and come back to it later, lol).

Ben Lacy Rose, a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was educated at Davidson College in North Carolina and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. His pastorates include a three-church field in Duplin County, North Carolina, Central Presbyterian Church, Bristol, Virginia, and Frist Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, North Carolina. Rose was professor of preaching and church administration at Union Theological Seminary for seventeen years, during which time he was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. Now retired, he is serving as minister of Hebron Presbyterian Church, Manakin Sabot, Virginia.

A TULIP BY ANOTHER NAME

Most people would associate a tulip as being a bulb that grows erect with showy cup-shaped flowers. John Calvin's tulip is certainly not the flower just described but an acronym describing five disputed points of his doctrine. TOTAL depravity, UNCONDITIONAL election, LIMITED atonement, IRRESISTIBLE grace and PERSEVERANCE of the saints are the cornerstone foundations upon which those of the Reformed protestant faith stand. It is also the least desirable topic to preach let alone understand in its minute details. Who wants to bore their congregation into sleep by preaching Calvinist doctrine?
Ben Rose remedies the situation by present us with a book on how to preach and study Calvin's five points. He takes each point and gives a definition of the doctrine, supplies the biblical support for it , explains the doctrine's function in our lives and at the end leaves us questions for reflection, discussion and appreciation for the particular point studied.
As one who is not of the Reformed tradition, I thoroughly enjoyed the book's simplicity, clarity on each point and its brevity. I appreciated Rose's daring attempt to take a complex doctrine and make it accessible and understandable to the congregants. He also emphasizes the need for doctrinal preaching and how it can be done without confusing the laity. This book is great for doctrinal studies, a resource for preaching and a refresher on Calvin's disputed points.

I am presently doing a study on how the Hyper-Calvinists/Ultra Calvinists believe for a class I teach. This book was informative on the five points of Calvinism.

Best explanation of T.U.L.I.P.

As a former Methodist, then a Catholic for 27 years and finally becoming a Reformed Christian, this was absolutely the best book I have found to be able to understand the Reformed/Presbyterian theology on the five disputed points of Calvinism. It is written in Laymen's terms and in such a way that after reading you understand well enough to teach the doctrine yourself. Well done Ben Rose!
