Classic Studies in the Female Form
By Hwang
This collection of studies on the female figure, rendered in black and white, comprising primarily of pencil sketches and drawings, rendered in ink, constitutes a fine selection of work that reflects a deep understanding of female anatomy from award winning artist, Frank Cho, and represents some of his finest work.

The volume also contains some sketches followed by the full fledged drawings in ink that attempts to demonstrate how the transition is made from rough sketches to some of the most delicately drawn and lovingly rendered graphic illustrations of the female figure ever produced.

The only caveat is there is nothing in oils nor air brush. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

Art of Cho
By Dalan Stormlost
I am immensely pleased by this product. Mr. Cho's illustrations are gorgeous and he lavishes attention on them. Particular favorites are some of his marvel pieces. The artist in my is particularly pleased by this raw sketches found throughout the book. His line work is nothing short of inspired. Its a shame (not really a complaint) that we only get to see his handsome handling of color on the cover of this book as it is black and white.
My only complaint is that the cover is a little on the flimsy side for how heavy the paper stock of the pages are.
Minor complaint aside, I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Illustration.

The Cave and the Light: Plato Versus Aristotle, and the Struggle for the Soul of Western Civilization, by Arthur Herman

Arthur Herman has now written the definitive sequel to his New York Times bestseller, How the Scots Invented the Modern World, and extends the themes of the book—which sold half a million copies worldwide—back to the ancient Greeks and forward to the age of the Internet. The Cave and the Light is a magisterial account of how the two greatest thinkers of the ancient world, Plato and Aristotle, laid the foundations of Western culture—and how their rivalry shaped the essential features of our culture down to the present day.

Plato came from a wealthy, connected Athenian family and lived a comfortable upper-class lifestyle until he met an odd little man named Socrates, who showed him a new world of ideas and ideals. Socrates taught Plato that a man must use reason to attain wisdom, and that the life of a lover of wisdom, a philosopher, was the pinnacle of achievement. Plato dedicated himself to living that ideal and went on to create a school, his famed Academy, to teach others the path to enlightenment through contemplation.

However, the same Academy that spread Plato’s teachings also fostered his greatest rival. Born to a family of Greek physicians, Aristotle had learned early on the value of observation and hands-on experience. Rather than rely on pure contemplation, he insisted that the truest path to knowledge is through empirical discovery and exploration of the world around us. Aristotle, Plato’s most brilliant pupil, thus settled on a philosophy very different from his instructor’s and launched a rivalry with profound effects on Western culture.

The two men disagreed on the fundamental purpose of the philosophy. For Plato, the image of the cave summed up man’s destined path, emerging from the darkness of material existence to the light of a higher and more spiritual truth. Aristotle thought otherwise. Instead of rising above mundane reality, he insisted, the philosopher’s job is to explain how the real world works, and how we can find our place in it. Aristotle set up a school in Athens to rival Plato’s Academy: the Lyceum. The competition that ensued between the two schools, and between Plato and Aristotle, set the world on an intellectual adventure that lasted through the Middle Ages and Renaissance and that still continues today.

From Martin Luther (who named Aristotle the third great enemy of true religion, after the devil and the Pope) to Karl Marx (whose utopian views rival Plato’s), heroes and villains of history have been inspired and incensed by these two master philosophers—but never outside their influence.

Accessible, riveting, and eloquently written, The Cave and the Light provides a stunning new perspective on the Western world, certain to open eyes and stir debate.

From Booklist
Herman (How the Scots Invented the Modern World, 2002) boils Western philosophy and culture down to two competing notions: the idealism of Plato and the empiricism of Aristotle. Plato, says Herman, asks, “How do you want your world to be?”; Aristotle, on the other hand, asks, “How do you fit into the world that already exists?” Walking through two and a half millennia of Western thought, Herman emphasizes that the two philosophies—the material and the spiritual aspects of existence—have repeated themselves through Western history, waxing and waning and remaining in tension with each other to the present day. Romanticism? Poetry? Totalitarian dogmatism? That’s Plato. The U.S. Constitution? The Manhattan Project? Modern consumer culture? That’s Aristotle. If it sounds like a sweeping polemic, that’s because it is; Herman seems to revel in overbroad claims, particularly when he’s talking about modern phenomena. Beneath all the broad assertions and polemic showiness, however, lies a serious argument for the primacy of Plato and Aristotle and the essential dynamism of a culture that embraces both philosophies.

INTELLECTUALLY STIMULATING
By Len Levinson
This book confirms and expands upon vague thoughts I've been having for a long time, namely that the world is made up of idealists and realists. According to the author, idealists are represented by Plato, and realists by Aristotle. Of course there are no 100% idealists or realists. Everyone includes both tendencies, but one usually predominates. The book explains how all philosophers and philosophies fit more or less into one or another of these two categories. I expect that professional philosophers, people with Ph.D.s and snobs will loathe this book because it's clearly written and easy to understand. They'll say it's a lightweight simplification of extremely abstruse matters. Well, what's wrong with writing clearly and straightforwardly? Idealists also will dislike this book because the author tends to be a realist. I think that most open-minded people will find the book very stimulating intellectually. It probably will diminish much of the confusion many feel in this bewildering, rapidly changing, baloney-driven world. It certainly clarified a lot for me.

Entertaining and thought-provoking tour of Western civilization's development
By Christopher Barat
It's been quite a while since I've read a book as enlightening as this. Arthur Herman (HOW THE SCOTS INVENTED THE MODERN WORLD) walks us through the history of Western civilization on the twin shoulders of Plato and Aristotle, who might be described as the "ultimate dead white males." The two philosophers' disagreements over the nature of reality and how best to understand the world continue to echo today. While I fully realize that Herman's disputatious dipole can't be used to explain every subsequent current in Western thought, it does provide a useful framework through which to understand how philosophical systems grew, flourished, declined, and/or adapted over time as they attempted to co-opt and/or synthesize the Platonian and Aristotelian worldviews.

Though Herman certainly does not short-shrift Plato's successors and carefully lays out the good and the bad consequences of the two Greeks' philosophies, it's not hard to detect a subtle Aristotelian bias. The best evidence of this is the inclusion, amidst a list of the very heaviest of philosophical hitters, of Ayn Rand. One of Herman's previous books (FREEDOM'S FORGE) covered the theme of the "heroic entrepreneur" as it related to American war production during World War II, so I do see how Rand's thinking along those lines might have appealed to him.

This would be an excellent "companion" book for a high-school or college course on "good old Western civ" or just a good, browse-able read for anyone seeking to further their liberal education outside the walls of academe. I think that I'll be revisiting it more than once.

Sheds light on the cultural battle between Aristotle and Plato
By Pete from across the River
This book explains the battles between Aristotle and Plato (Socrates) that have ensued over the years. The one, major, lasting contribution of Aristotle's philosophy is the development of "the scientific method" that has served western science very well once it was formalized in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Personally, I've always had trouble with Plato -- his viewpoint carried more mysticism than I could tolerate. Our overall society and western culture has reflected the ongoing battle between science/reason and mysticism/emotionalism that originated with the differing views of these two philosophers.

The historical aspect of the books are also quite interesting. During the middle-ages, when the Catholic Church was the dominant cultural force, "Aristotelian" scholars had become influential in various doctrinal matters. Unfortunately, these scholars did not actually reflect Aristotle's suggested processes ("examine nature to learn the truth") but rather accepted his determinations of "truth" which became embedded in church dogma. (e.g. Aristotle made numerous hypothesis about physical aspects of the world. Some were essentially correct, some were partially correct, and some were simply wrong based on future scientific discoveries.) By using Aristotelian determinations, the Church taught that we had an Earth centric universe. When Copernicus and Galileo suggested otherwise, the Church objected ... This attitude actually reflects Plato more than Aristotle, since Plato's view was that there was a set of "ideals" that we referenced to understand what a chair or table actually was.

You may draw different conclusions from the book ... and I'm not arguing for or against the conclusions of the author. Any fan of philosophic thinking and the history of cultural philosophy will find this book a fascinating read. Once you finish this book, I suggest reading The DIM Hypothesis by Leonard Peikoff.

Recommended for all ages
By Chris Gregory
Wow, what an award winning book! Besides the Newbery Medal, this book has won seven other notable awards. Although Avi authored this book for teens and young adults, I maintain that it is an interesting read for all adults as well. The protagonist is a teen girl and, consequently, that group might be more likely to find interest, but the story is intriguing for all age groups. As a sixty-six-year-old, I found this a worthwhile tale of shocking and incredible adventure. The notable aspects: the character and scene development are highly adept, and the foreshadowing, in the early chapters, directs the reader and sets the tone for the remainder of the story.

Although this is a fiction, and incredible to believe if otherwise; the author has obviously completed a great deal of time and effort studying the early 19th Century, ships, sailors, and seamanship of the era. The nomenclature of sailing terms, the ship's rigging, and its structures would leave one to reasonably assume that the author has an abundance of sailing experience. Also, the author appears to have insight into the psyche of a wealthy teen girl of this era.

Charlotte, a 13-year-old is required to travel, without her parents, from Britain to Providence, Rhode Island on a commercial ship. The ship is managed by a crew of questionable character and a sadistic captain, but initially, Charlotte is scheduled to be accompanied by two wealthy couples and their children. However, they are no shows. Still, the travel appears acceptable, although marginally, because the teen's father is an owner of the ship and cargo.

But the result is loneliness and fear for the young girl. Initially, she has nobody to talk with except Captain Jaggery. Although a gruff individual, he is both charming and gracious to Charlotte as he invites her to dine and accept tea with him. All others on the ship are considered beneath her station, but she befriends an old black man, the ship's cook, and Miss Doyle begins to trust him more than the captain. Also, Zachariah, the cook, gives Charlotte a dirk, a type of dagger-like knife. She doesn't want it, but is told to hide the dirk under her mattress for protection. During the voyage, there is a stowaway, an attempted mutiny, and a hurricane. Additionally, there are two murders and an accidental death. Charlotte is charged with one of the murders; she stands trial, and she is convicted and sentenced to be hanged. The intrigue in this tale is both remarkable and riveting as the reader is surely led to feel extreme empathy for Miss Doyle. I highly recommend this book for teens and adult readers of all ages. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and related readings is highly recommended.

and I would recommend it to a friend
By My 3 sons
I believe that The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle By: Avi is interesting and told well, and I would recommend it to a friend. I think this book earned 5 stars, and I am going to prove why.
Theme is the first reason why I would recommend this book to a friend. The theme makes the story interesting and teaches outstanding lessons. The theme of this book is don’t judge a book by its cover. Charlotte judged the crew members but they turned out to be good people.
Conflict is the second reason that makes the book interesting. The conflict made the book more exciting. The conflict of this book is when Charlotte Doyle was accused of murder and was found guilty. This type of conflict is called Man vs Man.
Avi’s use of similes is the third and last reason that makes the book interesting and makes me want to recommend this book to a friend. Similes help you visualize the story. A simile in this book is “She had a bowsprit from her like a unicorn’s horn.”
I am very confident that that this story is interesting and told well too.
Finally I would recommend The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle because the great use of Theme, Similes, and Conflict.

A memoir of shocking honesty by the graphic novelist behind 2011's acclaimed comic Paying for It

As with every Chester Brown book, The Playboy―originally published in 1992―was ahead of its time, illustrating the fearlessness and prescience of the iconoclastic cartoonist. A memoir about Brown's adolescent sexuality and shame, The Playboy chronicles his teenage obsession with the magazine of the same name, but it's also a work that explores the physical form of comics to their fullest storytelling capacity. In it, a fifteen-year-old Chester is visited by a time-traveling adult Chester, and the latter narrates the former's compulsion to purchase each issue of Playboy as it appears on newsstands. Even more fascinating than his obsession with the magazine is his need to keep his habit secret and the resulting lengths to which he goes to avoid detection by his family and, later, his girlfriends.
The comics that became The Playboy first appeared in issues of Brown's controversial, groundbreaking comic Yummy Fur more than twenty years ago, and yet the frankness of the work makes it seem avant-garde even now. As in every work by this master cartoonist, The Playboy uses no extra words, no extra panels, no extra lines, conveying environment and emotion through perfectly chosen moments. Fans of his acclaimed and controversial memoir Paying for It are sure to be drawn in by this early autobiographical portrait of blazing honesty. The expanded reissue includes all-new appendixes and notes from the author.

Review

“Brown has the ability to open a door that leads directly back into the very texture of childhood with all its darkness.” ―The Vancouver Sun

“Brown has painted these embarrassing scenes with cathartic candor but also with a keen eye for detail and an understated tone . . . A landmark look at an artist's growth.” ―The Comics Journal

good early work by Chester Brown
By Frank L. Greenagel Jr.
I discovered Chester Brown with his 2011 book "Paying For It." The trade was so well done that I ended up buying a lot of his other work (as well as Joe Matt's (who appeared in different sections of "Paying For It")). Brown's "I Never Liked You" is an honest look back at an early teenage relationship that takes place around the same time that Chester's mother dies. "Louis Riel" is about Western Canadian history in the mid to late 19th century, and is an absolutely stunning piece of writing and history.

Brown wrote "The Playboy" in the early 90's, and it has been put together and released as a comprehensive trade for the first time in ten years. Chester is exceedingly insightful and honest -- he is the ultra-rare autobiographer who does not attempt to cover up his flaws in order to have his readers view him more favorably. He puts pen to paper (just the facts), bares his soul and tells a story.

This story is about his love of Playboy magazine, and how he felt guilty each time after buying it. He would bury them in the woods or burn them, but then inevitably he would go out and buy the next issue. He details how Playboy shaped him sexually (both good and bad). Like his other work, he provides detailed endnotes.

Short and honest, but not groundbreaking
By Dunyazad
I read this super-short graphic memoir because I enjoyed the author's Paying for It earlier this year. This one centres around the shame and guilt that the author felt when enjoying Playboy magazine as a teenager in the 1970s. I feel bad for teenaged boys before the internet. But the basic concept, while sad, wasn't nearly as thought-provoking as that of Paying for It, where Brown decides to start hiring prostitutes. There were some amusing moments, like when he tries to burn a magazine in the family living room, but finds that it only blackens, and then his little brother walks in, and the author has to pretend that he's just playing with the fire while he's actually burning each page separately (and then he can't sleep from worrying that the charred spine might still be recognizable). But mostly I just felt bad for him, which might have been what he was going for. One of his girlfriends describes a friend's porn use as "disgusting" and says that it makes him a "pig". So then Brown can't even be fully honest or confident in his own relationships, but always feels like he has something to hide. I guess this helps me see why he ended up taking the route he did later in life, preferring prostitutes to girlfriends. But there's nothing really revelatory here.
