This is great CSS training

I have been somewhat coding my own websites for several years. What I do is start out with some sort of template or other site and then figure out how to code the changes I want to make them unique. This can be frustrating at best when you aren't familiar enough with CSS so I finally bit the bullet and bought a book. I'm glad that I bought the right one because this one rocks! I don't think that I got through the entire book in one day but this made learning CSS so much easier than I thought it would be. There are numerous examples and illustrations included, which is how I learn the best. Also, there are end-of-chapter exercises and a bonus project included in the book. A great resource for CSS.

The perfect guide for beginners that want to quickly learn how to navigate CSS

As a new entrant within the field of coding I was referred to this manual by a coworker of mine. Given that I’m very impatient and don’t have the time for a lot of chatter, this book was a perfect fit for me. The author is definitely an authority on the subject and the material is dense yet succinct. A huge help for me as I progressed through the pages were the end chapter exercises; they were very well designed. Also, I found that the concepts were well explained and perfectly suited for beginners like me, especially the explanations on float and position.

In summation, if you’re looking for a book on CSS that will instruct you clearly and swiftly, you can’t do better than this one.

This lean, mean, scabrously honest account of the making of Natural Born Killers amply proves the truism that moviemaking is a ``controlled accident.'' What goes on behind the scenes of certain movies is often a better, more involving story than what appears on-screen. Such is certainly the case with the notorious Natural Born Killers. One of Quentin Tarantino's early scripts, it was optioned by two ambitious recent film-school graduates, Hamsher and Don Murphy. The script was optioned when Tarantino was still an unknown; later, a suddenly hot Tarantino decided that he didn't want the film to be made. His substantial efforts to stop Murphy and Hamsher (including bad- mouthing the pair to studios) were trumped, however, when Oliver Stone decided that he wanted to make this his next film. And that's when things really spun out of control, including long, drug-fueled location-scouting trips, a prison riot during shooting, and innumerable back-stabbings. Stone's preferred modus operandi involves elaborate mindgames, playing his crew members off against each other--purportedly to energize their creativity. The results were predictably chaotic and venomous. Rarely has a book by a Hollywood player (albeit a minor one) been so confessional and recklessly revealing, detailing just how mean and twisted, petty and vindictive, the movie industry can be: ``The world of Hollywood . . . belonged to the cantankerous sons of bitches who were willing to risk any humiliation, broach any authority, get on the phone and scream until they got what they wanted.'' Hamsher freely burns bridges left and right, viciously (though apparently justifiably) damning Tarantino, sideswiping Stone, lambasting agents and studio execs. Forget lunch. If I could give this book a perfect 10, I would

I haven't read a traditional thriller novel in years, preferring my newer interest of strong heroines portrayed in urban fantasy novels. I like darker books, not books seeped in romance. Finding a good book is sometimes hard in a genre that mixes the two so much. After a while, those heroines with their supernatural powers and impossible skill sets often become cookie-cutter and formulaic, leaving a reader longing for something more believable, more *real*.

Look no further than the heroine created by Ms. Sharp. You will quickly slip into the character's skin and see parts of yourself within her inner complexity. I felt like I walked the streets of Lancaster with her and felt the pain of her past that shaped her into who she is today.

Charlie Fox is strong and a survivor through and through. She reminds me of Charlaine Harris' Lily Bard, in the author's popular woman sleuth Shakespeare series (one of two excellent mystery series she wrote before the one based on HBO's True Blood). While Fox's adventures are more bloody, more violent, and more heart stopping than Bard's, my comparison is more due to the smooth story telling, excellent pacing, and credible characters, which makes the portrayal of these fictional women very real and very believable.

I raced through the pages eager to see where the writer would take us and how Fox would pull through. Very rarely do I give up an entire day of my life to a book. This one was the exception. I loved it so much I immediately bought a copy for my father and plan to buy the others in the series as well. Ms. Sharp has a fan in me for life and I can hardly wait to read what other adventures she dreams up for Charlie Fox. Simply outstanding!

A very worthwhile read - especially the foreword!

I am glad I purchased this e-book. I wanted to read those extra scenes, and it has been lovely to visit Charlie's story again from the beginning, particularly after reading the 'Fox Five' e-thology.

Zo� recently wrote about her fondness for Dick Francis books growing up, and I can see similar elements in `Killer Instinct'. Clever use of words, twists and turns in the story, and a central core of justice. I like details and back story so it's really satisfying to read about Clare and Jacob, as well as background about where Charlie came from as a person. Overall it reads like an easy conversation, with intriguing and sometimes uncomfortable elements.

My fondness for 'Killer Instinct' is also sparked by Lee Child's foreword; it is my favorite relateable anecdote for books - Lee,your story made me laugh out loud - thanks for the enjoyment! As for the book I devoured it in an afternoon, I couldn't put it down. For a first novel, it's impressive.

The series and the writing has grown from strength to strength, I suppose I enjoyed the later books more because I came across them first - though this filled in story links alluded to in the later books. I find myself liking gory detail much less these days, so for me it's a well-balanced blend of a rollicking good read, without the stuff that keeps me awake nights. Charlie herself is someone I can relate to, in how she attempts to address the effects of pivotal events in her life - seeing how she handles her dilemmas has kept me engrossed. Character development is something that really keeps my interest, as well as the unexpected, and I've certainly been surprised.

Excellent new British tough heroine

If you like US female PIs (VI Warshawski, Kinsey Millhone) then you'll like Charlie Fox.
Charlie is tough. She teaches women's self-defence (which she took up after being raped in the army), rides a motorbike and is very independent.
The book starts with Charlie's friend Clare being attacked during karaoke night at a local nightclub by reigning champion Susie Hollins. Charlie deals with the attack and is offered a job as a bouncer by the clubs owner. Hours later Susie Hollins is found dead - the latest victim of a homicidal rapist that has been terrorising the local community. Lost in translation

Went to Japan.. most of these phrases made no sense to them. Finally met an American who spoke fluent Japanese. I showed him this book, he said to throw it out - none of it was accurate.

This book is insane!

I picked this book up on a whim and I cannot believe how crazy it is. It is so much fun just to flip through which, in fact, we were passing around and doing. I would suggest it to anyone that wants an in depth view of the slang and phrase that *ehem* would NOT make the cut in a normal dictionary.

This book is definitely not for children. There are sections that cover everything from slang terms, to fighting terms, to the nasty things you want to do to people. Everything a girl needs on her visit to Japan ;)

My only problem with it is the fact that some of the phrases in it are a bit outdated. Other than that it is perfect!

Not Just 'Dirty' Words

An excellent companion for your Japanese studies. the title is a bit misleading, as it is not just 'dirty' words. There is a lot of information about the Japanese culture and how you should address others, along with phrases more useful than where is the toilet, train station, hotel, etc... There are different chapters about different situations as well as the two chapters (Scat and Sex) about 'dirty' words. Not comprehensive but quite useful.

Before the encounter in 1981 between Hans-Georg Gadamer and Jacques Derrida, there had been virtually nor confrontation or dialogue between hermeneutics in Germany and post-structuralism in France, nor has there been since then. Part I of this book makes available for the first time in English the complete texts of the encounter at the Goethe Institute in Paris. This exchange raised such issues as Gadamer's relation to psychoanalytic interpretation, the questionability of texts, Heidegger's reading of Nietzsche, and the dialogical aspect of language.

Part II offers further reflections by Gadamer on the encounter itself and its relation of hermeneutics to deconstruction. Among the issues covered are Derrida's interpretation of "Destruktion" in Heidegger, Derrida's attack on logocentrism in Heidegger's interpreattion of Nietzsche, and the relation of Heidegger, hermeneutics, and deconstruction to dialectic.

Part III offers commentaries on the encounter from a variety of perspectives. The authors assess the original encounter as well as Gadamer's subsequent reflections on it.

About the Author
In 2007, Nikola Danaylov was a master's degree student in Political Science looking for an interesting topic to write his thesis on. Nikola was tired of WWI and WWII research papers and wanted to do something different, something that not everyone was familiar with, where he could dare to make a contribution. One day, as he was watching the news coming from Iraq and Afghanistan, Nikola decided to look into drone warfare. Doing research on military drones pushed him into the field of Artificial Intelligence and there he discovered Ray Kurzweil's seminal book, "The Singularity is Near." The very next book he read was Charlie Stross' science fiction novel, "Accelerando." In 2009, he completed his master's degree and entered the army of unemployed job seekers at the peak of the recession. "I stopped counting after I sent out 300 resumes - I got one interview which apparently didn't go well because they never called me back, Nikola remembers. "One of my applications went out to the first and only blog dedicated to the technological singularity - Singularity Hub. The Hub was looking to hire a staff writer and, given my education, past research and writing skills, I thought I made the best candidate you could get. I eagerly anticipated an email telling me how totally perfect I was for the job, but the email never came. So, after two weeks of waiting in vain, it slowly started to dawn on me that I wasn't getting that job either. Then, a crazy thought occurred to me: maybe, just maybe, I didn't need them. Perhaps there was some tiny chance I might be able to do it on my own. I could start my own Singularity website. I mean, how hard could it be?" Seven years after its humble beginning, the Singularity.FM podcast has had over 4.2 million views on iTunes and YouTube and has been featured on international TV networks as well as on some of the biggest blogs in the world, such as BBC, ArteTV, TV Japan, io9, The Telegraph, The Huffington Post, ZDNet, BoingBoing and others. Riveting interviews that will stretch your mind and satisfy your curiosity.

I have been listening to Nikola Danaylov's (alias Socrates)'s superbly incisive and insightful interviews for a long time, and wait with excitement for the next fascinating person he interviews [see singularityweblog]. Now we have these incredible interviews compiled into Conversations with the Future, which I find so valuable in complementing the audio and video interviews. Regardless of your how one thinks about the future, each of these interviews will sharpen your thinking and open new reflective and contemplative avenues for any curious soul. I have learned a considerable amount from each individual, and my reading has broadened appreciably as a result of Nikola Danaylov's remarkable accumulation of learned people's deep thoughts and deep work. I am already looking forward to the next volume!!

The title says it all

This is an excellent read, coming at the questions of the "technological singularity" from a variety of different angles. Remarkably, the "conversations" are with some really high-level thinkers, yet are presented in a way that is readily accessible even if you've never given this stuff any serious thought before. And, rather than presenting a single, monolithic "this is what's coming" vision, these conversations offer a diversity of views, coming at the question from many different angles.

Whether we think about it consciously or not, we all know that technology is advancing and bringing us to a place where our tools are becoming something much more than "tools" have ever been before. Our smartphones, our laptops, the internet itself -- things which did not even exist, and which most of us would not have even imagined could exist, a few decades ago -- are already indispensable to our lives. And they have changed us. As our tools become smarter and smarter, maybe smarter than us ... how will they change our lives, and, more importantly, how will they change us? This book does not answer those questions. Instead, it provokes them.

The author presents a delightful variety of perspectives on just what that future may hold, and just what that future could mean to who and what we are. Heavy stuff, coming from heavy thinkers, but presented relatively lightly. You don't need to be any sort of expert to be able to follow the conversations. It's a lively and engaging read, provoking thoughts that you ask yourself why you didn't think them before.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who can remember a world before Facebook and who has ever wondered how if so much has changed in the near past, how much will change in the near future. This book also be a terrific gift for anyone with the slightest interest in what the future may hold ... from the serious techie to the casual sci-fi fan. Highly recommended.

Nikola Danaylov is the MC of the Technological Singularity

The technological singularity, by one definition, is a singular, near-future phenomena in which the exponentially increasing pace of technological advancement will not be measured in functional human terms. Conversations with the Future is the compilation of some of Danaylov's most enlightening and provocative interviews about and related to the technological singularity. Topics range from industrial automation to artificial intelligence to radical life extension and much more. In my opinion, Danaylov is the best at what he does—asking the questions so that you may ponder and perhaps formulate your own answers. Highly recommended to everyone interested in the future.
