Avoid Buyer's Remorse! Are you thinking of purchasing this book, or even using one of your precious Amazon Prime ‘freebies’ on the ebook version of it? If so, please spare a moment to take the following short quiz: 1. Does the cover of your preferred historical reading matter traditionally feature either a woman in danger of a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ or a man who has misplaced his shirt (or at least his buttons), or both? 2. When you say to your friends, “Oh, I just love Mr. Darcy!” are you, in fact, thinking of Colin Firth jumping into a BBC fish pond, rather than Jane Austen’s intricate creation, who had been ‘a selfish being all his life, in practice, though not in principle’? 3. Do you deplore the fact that Jane Austen was herself the daughter of a clergyman, and that, however delightfully ironic her writing and witty her observations, she insisted on adhering to the somewhat priggish view that a charming rake was not a hero, but a villain--and also demonstrated other symptoms of ‘outdated morality’? 4. If you dutifully plowed through Mansfield Park, were you horrified to discover that Henry Crawford was not, after all, the hero? 5. And finally, like Winnie-the-Pooh, do you find it is “more fun to talk with someone who doesn’t use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like ‘What about lunch?’”--and, perforce, more fun to read them, as well? If you answered yes to all, or even most, of the above questions, DO NOT BUY THIS TITLE IN ANY FORM. You won’t enjoy it, and, thus embittered by this needless waste of your time and funds, your only satisfaction will be to write a scathing review of a book that was never intended for your delectation in the first place. From the back cover: The year was 1805; the place, England. Napoleon was scheming how to wrest control of the Channel from the British Navy so that he might at last invade the island "nation of shopkeepers" that kept interfering with his plans to dominate all of Europe. Lord Nelson was chasing the Emperor's fleet across the oceans in a hunt that would shortly culminate in the battle of Trafalgar. But on a quiet estate in Warwickshire, "just near enough to Stratford to take a proprietary interest in its immortal Bard," Ann Northcott was much more concerned with her mother's schemes. Those schemes would send Ann and her friend Julia Parry far away from their beloved Merriweather, on a turbulent voyage into a fashionable London season. For both of them, it would prove to be a journey of discovery into the true nature of Friendship and Folly.

Delightful surprise
By Miz Waller
I love Regency romances and have a high standard for the ones I consider "keepers". I don't really like the Jane imitators and don't usually read them. Forget all of these snide remarks of mine and settle down for a great read with "Friendship and Folly". When you find a book that made you laugh at loud, gnash your teeth, and tear up (not all at the same time) then you know you want to read more of that author. I'm only sorry that this seems to be the only book by Meredith Allady.

Worth it but not a romance
By Martinez
I'm surprised and not by the unabashed endorsement of the other reviewers. While Friendship and Folly is certainly an enjoyable read it is by no means a five star book, at least not when compared to truly good writing.

But I can totally see this author getting better, more polished and really achieving writing worth of fandom. The book's best attribute is its characters, especially Ann and Clive from whom the funniest lines and the most human frailty come from.

I also enjoyed the unhurried descriptions and tangents the story takes now and again. The writing style is evocative of Austen and Heyer but not even approaching the level of these literary giants. Though I'd definitely read another book by the author. I liked it. I liked it very well. And I might even reread it, which is the highest compliment I can pay it.

The three things I took issue with are as follows:
The romance is not center stage. It's not even on stage.
It's wordy. So much so that I had to reread a few incredibly long run on sentences up to three times.
I wish Ann was the heroine, she is much more the stuff heroines are made of than Julia.
I don't know how to classify it, it's not romance, comedy of manners, drama, comedy. It's good, I just don't know what it is.

Go ahead, buy it, you'll enjoy it.

For those who care the language is clean and the bedroom door firmly shut.

Good, old-fashioned type of book
By Peanut
I really enjoyed this book! Obviously there will be a second book forthcoming, probably with Anne having her own romance...It's written something in a style similar to Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer...A sort of comedy/romance.

I was really pleased to finally find another book by Meredith Allady today available for free Kindle download at Smashwords! It's called "Letters from Bath; Or, A Friend in Exile". I haven't read it yet but am hoping it will be as good as "Friendship and Folly"!

The House of Twenty Thousand Books, by Sasha Abramsky

Named one of Kirkus's Best Nonfiction Books of 2015

The House of Twenty Thousand Books is the story of Chimen Abramsky, an extraordinary polymath and bibliophile who amassed a vast collection of socialist literature and Jewish history. For more than fifty years Chimen and his wife, Miriam, hosted epic gatherings in their house of books that brought together many of the age’s greatest thinkers.

The atheist son of one of the century’s most important rabbis, Chimen was born in 1916 near Minsk, spent his early teenage years in Moscow while his father served time in a Siberian labor camp for religious proselytizing, and then immigrated to London, where he discovered the writings of Karl Marx and became involved in left-wing politics. He briefly attended the newly established Hebrew University in Jerusalem, until World War II interrupted his studies. Back in England, he married, and for many years he and Miriam ran a respected Jewish bookshop in London’s East End. When the Nazis invaded Russia in June 1941, Chimen joined the Communist Party, becoming a leading figure in the party’s National Jewish Committee. He remained a member until 1958, when, shockingly late in the day, he finally acknowledged the atrocities committed by Stalin. In middle age, Chimen reinvented himself once more, this time as a liberal thinker, humanist, professor, and manuscripts’ expert for Sotheby’s auction house.

Journalist Sasha Abramsky re-creates here a lost world, bringing to life the people, the books, and the ideas that filled his grandparents’ house, from gatherings that included Eric Hobsbawm and Isaiah Berlin to books with Marx’s handwritten notes, William Morris manuscripts and woodcuts, an early sixteenth-century Bomberg Bible, and a first edition of Descartes’s Meditations. The House of Twenty Thousand Books is a wondrous journey through our times, from the vanished worlds of Eastern European Jewry to the cacophonous politics of modernity.

Review
"This is a fierce and beautiful book. It burns with a passion for ideas, the value of history, the need for argument. As a memoir of a grandfather it is sui generis. I loved it."—Edmund de Waal, author of The Hare with Amber Eyes

"Sasha Abramsky's account of his grandfather's devotion to books and reading is a moving testimonial to the persistance of human curiosity in a world that seems to drift farther and farther from the delight of intellectual pursuits. It is a moving, instructive, astonishing account of one man's love for the printed word that all readers will appreciate. The House of Twenty Thousand Books deserves twenty hundred thousand readers. — Alberto Manguel

“The House of Twenty Thousand Bookslovingly recreates an intellectual milieu that was built around old books, chess games, Russian dominoes, Eastern European food, hot tea, family and long evenings spent in spirited political debate." —Michael Dirda,The Washington Post

"[Sasha Abramsky] has a knack for swimming deep in the sea of ideas... [He] offers smart, concise pocket explanations of matters ranging from the effect of 18th-century French utopianism on leftist thinking to brief discourses on methodologies of Talmud study...Drawing on numerous interviews with Chimen’s contemporaries and an impressively deep dive into the archives, the book grapples sensitively and honestly with how many of the conversations at 5 Hillway were conducted...In his grandson’s loving, but intellectually responsible tribute, Chimen Abramsky has found his posterity.”—Jeremy Dauber,The Wall Street Journal

“An evocative, often affecting and remarkably candid chronicle of Chimen [Abramsky’s] life...One of the strategies I most admired about this book is that Sasha chooses to offer succinct essays about the ideas, historical events and personalities that animated his grandfather. Sasha is so vivid a writer that scenes linger in the memory...For anyone who cannot throw away a book, even if it will never be read and even if it ends up crowding a home,The House of Twenty Thousand Booksis an affirmation.” —Joseph Berger,Haaretz

"Vividly written and well-researched, Abramsky’s memoir is seldom less than absorbing.” —Jacob Heilbrunn,The National Interest

"A narrative that tells the tale of the 20thcentury: communists, zionists, fascists, fetishists, secularists and a great scene of academic intrigue. Chimen Abramsky is a worthy subject: his unorthodox intellectual approach and his awe-inspiring collection of books are both marvels to behold. While Abramsky’s grandson writes the story of his life with subtlety and affection, he also evokes the culture of the time in all its foolishness, grandeur, earnestness and ideological disappointment." —Jeff Deutsch, Seminary Co-op Bookstore

“[A]warmhearted, frank memoir...Abramsky shares fascinating stories of British intellectual luminaries like Eric Hobsbawm and Isaiah Berlin who were regular visitors to 5 Hillway or close friends of his grandfather...as much as this book is the story of a life of the mind, it's also a tender account of the way this increasingly dilapidated, book-crammed home became for an adoring grandson, 'my school, my university, my library, my sanctuary when the going got tough at home.' Balancing that affection with a sense of awe at the story of his grandfather's fascinating life, Sasha Abramsky has produced a work that will appeal to book lovers and readers of family memoir.” —Harvey Freedenberg,Shelf Awareness

“Sasha Abramsky’s account rambles into marvelously eclectic corners, from the authentication of incunabula, to the differences between vellum and parchment, to the Rabbinic position on pigskin bindings...Certainly Chimen’s lifelong friendships with Isaiah Berlin, Piero Sraffa, and other twentieth century thinkers will interest many readers. But the most fascinating story is the evolution of Chimen himself—the son with serious rabbinicyichiswho rejected religion but ran two Seders a year and never servedtreyfin his home; the Party member so faithful he eulogized Stalin, until he discovered the lies and turned in his membership card; the book dealer who spent decades curating an exhaustive collection of Socialist literature, only to become one of Europe’s leading collectors of Judaica. Historians of the Old and New Left movements in Britain, students of Jewish history and philosophy, and book-lovers of any stripe will find this memoir totally absorbing.” —Bettina Birch,Jewish Book World

"The sheer richness of this marvelous book— in terms of its style, think Borges, Perec—amply complements the wondrous complexity of the family—in terms of its subject matter, think the Eitingons, the Ephrussi—about which Sasha Abramsky writes so lovingly. And as a portrait of London’s left-wing Jewish intellectual life it is surely without equal."—Simon Winchester, author of The Professor and the Mad Man

"Transformative journeys were undertaken by more than a million Russian Jews between the 1890s and 1920s, expelled by successive waves of pogroms, revolution, civil war and persecution. Sasha Abramsky’s tender, intelligent, many-layered memoir of his grand-parents, The House of Twenty Thousand Books, is a version of this same story, at once epic and intimate, rooted in family life but encompassing the sweep of history. At its heart are loss and renewal, tradition and reinvention, schism and continuity."—Rebecca Abrams, Financial Times

"A wonderful celebration of the mind, history, and love."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"This utterly remarkable book vividly captures a lost world.” —Library Journal

"Sasha Abramsky has produced a wonderful addition to the canon of Jewish grandchild literature: one that would be well worth its place in Chimen Abramsky’s now immortal house of books."—Toby Lichtig, The Times Literary Supplement

"Sasha Abramsky has combined four kinds of history —familial, political, Jewish, and literary—into one brilliant and compelling book. With him as an erudite and sensitive guide, any reader will be grateful for the opportunity to be immersed into the house of twenty thousand books."—Samuel G. Freedman

"The book succeeds marvelously. . . . The descriptions of the atmosphere of the Abramsky house itself are ravishing, and Sasha telegraphs his childlike delight in cradling his patrimony."—Vladislav Davidzon, Tablet

"Abramsky’s tale begins after his grandfather Chimen’s death, with his family faced with the daunting task of cleaning out a London house filled to bursting with books, many of them rare, on Marxism, socialism, and Judaica. Doing so stirred the desire to make sense of this literary and familial legacy, which Abramsky chronicles in a loving but clear-eyed manner." —Publishers Weekly

“The House of Twenty Thousand Booksis an entertaining and passionate mix of genealogy, bibliomania and intellectual history and is a must read for the those of us living with books.” —Michael Lieberman,Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"Memorialising an epoch in Jewish life, [Abramsky] mixes the visual with the instructive in a way that could inspire a television series." --The Jewish Chronicle

"I loved this touching and heartfelt celebration of a scholar, teacher and bibliophile, a man whose profound learning was fine-tempered by humane wisdom and self-knowledge. We might all of us envy Sasha Abramsky in possessing such a remarkable grandfather, heroic in his integrity and evoked for us here with real eloquence and affection." --Jonathan Keates

"...wonderfully warm and evocative" --Peter Dreier, Huffington Post

"The House of Twenty Thousand Booksis a grandson's elegy for the vanished world of his grandparents’ house in London and the exuberant, passionate jostling of two traditions – Jewish and Marxist – that intertwined in his growing up. It is a fascinating memoir of the fatal encounter between Russian Jewish yearning for freedom and the Stalinist creed, a grandson's unsparing, but loving reckoning with a conflicted inheritance. In the digital age, it will also make you long for the smell of old books, the dust on shelves and the collector's passions, all on display inThe House of Twenty Thousand Books." —Michael Ignatieff

The Red House at 5 Hillway
By Christian Schlect
A grandson's well-written tribute to grandparents, especially the grandfather, who valued family and books and their common Jewish intellectual heritage, The long life-span of the two allows for thoughts on political subjects from the end of the Russian czar, through Hitler's reign, to the eventual fall of the Berlin Wall. And allows for musings on what makes for a good life.

I found most interesting the material in this book related to the Stalin era and the one time devotion by this intelligent couple, located in England but with roots in Eastern Europe, to a political cause that failed so miserably.

The role of religious symbols and traditions, even in the absence of explicit faith, is also a theme that is explored with much insight by Mr. Abramsky.

Finally, book collectors will enjoy reading about a high priest of their calling.

It is beautifully written and takes the reader back to a time ...
By Gerald Singleton
While I have been a fan of most of Mr. Abramsky's books (particularly those on poverty in modern America and the inequities of out broken criminal justice system), I was absolutely blown away by this book. It is beautifully written and takes the reader back to a time and place which exists nowhere but in the memories of people (like Mr. Abramsky) who were fortunate enough to know the wonderful characters who populate this work. If a novelist had attempted to create a character like Chaim Abramsky, no one would have believed he could have existed. I cannot recommend "The House of Twenty Thousand Books" strongly enough.

Master the Principles and Vocabulary of Game Design

Why aren’t videogames getting better? Why does it feel like we’re playing the same games, over and over again? Why aren’t games helping us transform our lives, like great music, books, and movies do?

The problem is language. We still don’t know how to talk about game design. We can’t share our visions. We forget what works (and doesn’t). We don’t learn from history. It’s too hard to improve.

The breakthrough starts here. A Game Design Vocabulary gives us the complete game design framework we desperately need—whether we create games, study them, review them, or build businesses on them.

Craft amazing experiences. Anna Anthropy and Naomi Clark share foundational principles, examples, and exercises that help you create great player experiences…complement intuition with design discipline…and craft games that succeed brilliantly on every level.

  • Liberate yourself from stale clichs and genres
  • Tell great stories: go way beyond cutscenes and text dumps
  • Control the crucial relationships between game “verbs” and “objects”
  • Wield the full power of development, conflict, climax, and resolution
  • Shape scenes, pacing, and player choices
  • Deepen context via art, animation, music, and sound
  • Help players discover, understand, engage, and “talk back” to you
  • Effectively use resistance and difficulty: the “push and pull” of games
  • Design holistically: integrate visuals, audio, and controls
  • Communicate a design vision everyone can understand

Review

“A Game Design Vocabulary succeeds where many have failed–to provide a broad-strokes overview of videogame design. Utilizing analytic smarts, an encyclopedic knowledge of games, and subcultural attitude, Naomi Clark and Anna Anthropy get to the heart of how games work.

“Why is this book important? Videogames are the defining mass medium of our time, yet even those who make games lack a clear language for understanding their fundamental mechanics. A Game Design Vocabulary is essential reading for game creators, students, critics, scholars, and fans who crave insight into how game play becomes meaningful.”

–Eric Zimmerman, Independent Game Designer and Arts Professor, NYU Game Center

“A Game Design Vocabulary marks an important step forward for our discipline. Anna Anthropy and Naomi Clark’s extraordinarily lucid explanatio ns give us new ways to unpick the complexities of digital game design. Grounded in practical examples and bursting with original thinking, you need this book in your game design library.”

–Richard Lemarchand, Associate Professor, USC, Lead Designer, Uncharted

“Anthropy and Clark have done it! Created an intuitive vocabulary and introduction to game design in a concise, clear, and fun-to-read package. The exercises alone are a great set of limbering-up tools for those new to making games and seasoned designers, both.”

–Colleen Macklin, Game Designer and Professor, Parsons The New School for Design

“Two of my favorite game design minds sharing a powerful set of tools for designing meaningful games? I’m so excited for this book. A Game Design Vocabulary may very well be the best thing to happen to game design education in more than a decade. I can’t wait to put this book in the hands of my students and dev friends alike.”

–John Sharp, Associate Professor of Games and Learning, Parsons The New School for Design

“Some of the greatest challenges to the intelligent advancement of game-making can be found in the ways we conceptualize and discuss them. This simple yet profound new vocabulary is long-overdue and accessible enough to help new creators work within a meaningful framework for games.”

–Leigh Alexander, Game Journalist and Critic

Thoughtful discussion of game design
By David Dunham
Although I have 3 published designs and have worked on dozens of other games, Anna Anthropy’s chapters made me feel like I know nothing about game design. In other words, it was challenging, which is a good thing. The latter part of the book, by Naomi Clark, was a little closer to my experience but still instructional.

Requiring Windows to do some of the exercises was a turn-off, especially since I was reading on an iPad.

Too rambling and unfocused.
By Joseph J. Cassavaugh
Although there are some interesting points about game design brought up within; the unfocused and rambling examples of crude and simple games detracts from it's overall intent. I'm 4 chapters in and debating whether it's worth my time to continue reading it.

Decades after Hitler’s fall, Nazis are still trying to kill John Cooper
His marriage destroyed by drinking, John Cooper returns to Cambridge, Massachusetts, trying to recapture the joy he felt as an undergraduate in Harvard University’s sacred halls. He is just beginning to piece his life together when he gets a telegram calling him home to Minnesota. The message comes from Buenos Aires, and with Cooper’s family history, that can mean only one thing: The Nazis are staging a comeback. To John and his brother, their grandfather was a kind, distinguished old man. But to the American people, he was the worst kind of traitor. An industrialist who spent the 1930s in business with Fascists, he became infamous as “America’s Number One Nazi.” When Hitler’s old lieutenants decide to get together a Fourth Reich, the Coopers are the first family they call. John hasn’t even made it to Minnesota when the first attempt on his life comes—a message that if he isn’t ready to honor his family legacy, he will die for it.

Complex and involving
By A Customer
The Wind Chill Factor isn't necessarily an easy book to read. The plot is complex and if you don't keep up with the different twists, it would be easy to get lost in the details. However, this is absolutely one of the most richly written books I've ever read. The sensations the lead character experience become the reader's sensations; his thoughts, your thoughts. Once you commit your energy to the story, you'll be hard pressed to put the book down until you are finished.

Dont Cry for me Minnesota
By TundraBee
1972: Drat! We have Nixon AND resurgent Nazi sleeper cells here and around the globe? John Cooper is recently divorced and eking out an AA-assisted writer's existence in Cambridge, MA when he receives a cryptic telegram from his elder brother, who is inexplicably in Buenos Aires:
"URGENT YOU MEET ME COOPER'S FALLS 20 JANUARY. DROP EVERYTHING. FAMILY TREE NEEDS ATTENTION. CHEERS OLD BOY. CYRIL."
So home to the family namesake Cooper's Falls, Mn goes John Cooper. This Ludlum-esque page-turner had me as soon as John Cooper's Lincoln swung northward in Chicago and headed on the long ago familiar Illinois Tollroad trip towards home in Minnesota - with a stop at "one of the Fred Harvey emporiums." Almost run off the road near Madison in a blizzard, John goes home to revisit old family secrets. Then round and round the globe he goes, where it stops only author Thomas Gifford knows. I was up all night following the intrigue!

Electrifying story of a complex family
By Edward H. Binns
I am amazed and shocked at the vitriol and venom expressed against Gifford in some of these reviews! It's a sign that Gifford is a challenging writer.

It also surprised me, in 1972, that this book was never made into a movie. "Soon to be a major motion picture" said the cover. It never happened.

To the naysaying and nitpicking reviewers, I say, "Grow up." Gifford has captured something ugly and important here in this book. I used to audit county courts and county governments. Later I worked for a chief financial officer who lied under oath to a congressional committee and was fired by the organization's board. I've seen a lot of ruthless, petty, dishonest people.

And this book is a masterpiece in collecting such personalities. It ranks with Robert Towne's immortal screenplay for "Chinatown." And it is almost a screenplay itself. The main character is a literate but down-on-his-luck divorced movie buff, John Cooper, who makes innumerable references to classic motion pictures. He becomes a friend of the local police chief, a boy wonder who got away from the big city force by marrying a rich woman, like Dashell Hammit's Nick Charles.

The tale boomerangs through three continents. These things happen. There are villians like this out there.

If you like this book, you will also like the sequel, "The First Sacrifice" and a triumphant nail-biter about counterfeiting, "The Man from Lisbon," which I think is Gifford's best book ever.

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) must be met by all organizations (merchants and service providers) that transmit, process or store payment card data. It is a contractual obligation applied and enforced - by means of fines or other restrictions - directly by the payment providers themselves. As the cybercrime market evolves, attackers, targets and techniques do as well. The majority of data breaches still occur because basic controls are not in place, or because those that were present were not consistently implemented across an organization. If obvious weaknesses are left exposed, chances are the attacker will exploit them. The objective of this revised practical guide is to give entities advice and tips on the entire PCI implementation process. It provides a roadmap, helping entities to navigate the broad, and sometimes confusing, PCI DSS v2, and shows them how to build and maintain a sustainable PCI compliance program. This latest revision also includes increased guidance on how to ensure your compliance program is 'sustainable' and has been based on real-life scenarios, which should help to ensure your PCI compliance program remains compliant. Although the guide starts with sections on why and what is PCI, it is not intended to replace the 'publicly available' PCI information. This book looks to serve those who have been given the responsibility of PCI, and does not attempt to provide all the answers. It should be read, absorbed and digested only with a good helping of other PCI 'publicly available' information. In other words, it will help an organization or individual, get started, and hopefully furnish the reader with enough of the fundamental basics to create, design and build the organization's own PCI compliance framework.

The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, People, and Communities, by Will Allen

A pioneering urban farmer and MacArthur “Genius Award” winner points the way to building a new food system that can feed—and heal—broken communities.

The son of a sharecropper, Will Allen had no intention of ever becoming a farmer himself. But after years in professional basketball and as an executive for Kentucky Fried Chicken and Procter & Gamble, Allen cashed in his retirement fund for a two-acre plot a half mile away from Milwaukee’s largest public housing project. The area was a food desert with only convenience stores and fast-food restaurants to serve the needs of local residents.

In the face of financial challenges and daunting odds, Allen built the country’s preeminent urban farm—a food and educational center that now produces enough vegetables and fish year-round to feed thousands of people. Employing young people from the neighboring housing project and community, Growing Power has sought to prove that local food systems can help troubled youths, dismantle racism, create jobs, bring urban and rural communities closer together, and improve public health. Today, Allen’s organization helps develop community food systems across the country.

An eco-classic in the making, The Good Food Revolution is the story of Will’s personal journey, the lives he has touched, and a grassroots movement that is changing the way our nation eats.

Willie Mae Kenner

She held a one-way ticket.

In December of 1934, my mother, Willie Mae Kenner, stood in the waiting room for colored people at the train station in Batesburg, South Carolina. She was twenty-five years old. Her two young boys, my older brothers, were at her side. She was heading to Union Station in Washington, D.C. She was trying to escape our family’s long history in agriculture.

I imagine her on this day. Willie Mae was known to be beautiful and headstrong. Many local men had called her “fine”—she had strong legs, smooth skin, a round and lovely face, and thoughtful eyes. She also had dreams that were too big for her circumstances. She and her husband, and seven of her nine siblings, were sharecroppers: tenant farmers who gave up half of the crop they planted and harvested each season in exchange for the right to pick it. It was the only life that she had known.

My mother held different hopes in her heart, both for herself and her children. She had fought to obtain a teaching degree from Schofield Normal and Industrial School, a two-year college initially set up after the Civil War by Quakers, to educate free slaves. She wanted to be a teacher. Her family noticed that when she was required to pick cotton or asparagus, she did the work without complaint. Yet she wore a long, flowing dress on top of her work shirt and pants while in the fields. It was as if she wanted to find a way to give grace and dignity to work that often provided neither.

From the train station in Batesburg, Willie Mae was trying to escape asparagus and cotton. At the time, the South was still in the thrall of “Jim Crow”: the rigid set of laws set up after the Civil War to separate whites and blacks in almost every part of public life. The 1896 Supreme Court decision in Plessy v. Ferguson—allowing “separate but equal” facilities for black people—meant that my mother could not share the same train car with white passengers. She and her children could not even wait in the same area for the train to come. Her train car sat directly behind the coal car, where men shoveled the rocks into the roaring engine. The smoke of the engine blew through the car’s windows and seeped into her clothes. She and her two boys would need to use a bathroom marked not “Men” or “Women” but “C,” for “Colored.”

Her journey was to take her to the nation’s capital, where Willie Mae planned to reunite with her husband, James Kenner. His friends called him “Major,” for reasons I never understood. He had left South Carolina after falling into debt. During the Great Depression, the price for cotton had dropped to only 5 cents a pound— down from 35 cents only a decade earlier. Major had found himself owing more to his landowner at the end of the planting season than when he began it. Sharecropping had begun to feel like slavery under another name.

“There’s no money here,” he told my mother shortly before leaving.

Major found a small place to live in Ken Gar, an all-black neighborhood on the edge of Kensington, Maryland, ten miles from the White House. He sent word to my mother to come. Major was now building houses instead of planting crops. Willie Mae had never seen the place she was going to call home.

My mother left the South before I was born. I know from relatives that she decided against boarding her departing train at the nearest station, in Ridge Spring, likely out of concern that local people would talk about her. When I was growing up, she rarely spoke of her Southern past, as if it were a secret that was best not talked about in polite company. She told my brothers and me that she liked the taste of every vegetable except asparagus—she simply had picked too much of it.

I have wondered what passed through her mind when the train pulled out of Batesburg. As the locomotive edged north out of South Carolina, she would have seen from the windows the life she had known. She would have seen the long-leaf pine trees, the sandy soil, and the fields that yielded cotton and parsnips and cabbage and watermelon. She would have seen other sharecroppers at work, their clothing heavy with sweat.

Willie Mae knew how to sustain her family in South Carolina. She had learned from her mother how to bed sweet potatoes and garden peas and cabbage and onions in the early spring. When the full heat of summer came, she had learned how to plant turnips and eggplants and cucumbers and hot peppers and okra and cantaloupes. She had learned how to take all the parts of a hog that the men slaughtered and turn it into souse (a pickled hog’s head cheese), scrapple (a hog meatloaf), liver pudding, or a dish called “chitlin’ strut”—fried pig intestines. She had learned in the late autumn how to can peaches and sauerkraut and pecans and yams for the cold season.

She was leaving for a city where it was uncertain if any of the skills she had—or any of the dreams she harbored—would matter.

The Good Food Revolution has real "Growing Power"
By Lawgirlamy
The Good Food Revolution is the best book I've read in a long time. My interest in local and urban agriculture drew me to the book; the intimate stories of individuals and communities that frame that meta-narrative drew me into it. The book arrived on Wednesday. Despite an excessively busy schedule, I had completed it by early Saturday morning, often forgoing much-needed sleep because I simply could not put it down.

The rich and engaging stories of individuals and their relationships to one another through family, community, and politics are told through the lenses of race, economics, and, of course, agriculture, all woven together by Will Allen in a style that is at once eloquent and folksy; comprehensive and intimate. Through engaging vignettes, Will Allen's The Good Food Revolution provides glimpses into the history of this nation, with particular emphasis on the different experiences of people of different races. The story is deeply personal, yet told in a way that we can all feel like we are a part of it and of the future envisioned by Will Allen.

Will Allen shares stories of past and present racial inequality in a tone that is likely to draw people in, rather than make people feel either guilty or entitled. Unlike the judgmental and accusatory tone often found in such accounts, Mr. Allen's gentle and understanding tone allows him to capture the extreme difficulties faced by people of color without alienating others. By handling even the most shameful aspects of our nation's history with grace and tact, Mr. Allen was able to draw me into the stories without feeling like a would-be savior or presumed culprit for our divided history. Rather, I felt like an invited guest to our shared future.

Mr. Allen tells the story of environmental damage wrought by modern agricultural practices in much the same tone, with understanding towards those who are practicing out of ignorance - even admitting some of his own less-than-best practices over the years. This approach is far more likely to result in converts to his way of thinking than the acerbic, arrogant, and accusatory tone that often seem to underlie discussions of both agriculture and race these days.

Mr. Allen, who describes himself as a muscular 6'7", seems to have an awareness of the effectiveness of this approach:

I also recognized there was a power in bing both huge and polite; I invoked fear in people and allayed it at the same time. (p. 69).

By approaching the topic in this way, my eyes were opened to things I wasn't fully aware of before and I was very receptive to hearing it from him. For example, I'm a big proponent of the local food movement and of organic and sustainable agricultural practices. I believe that much of our public policy favors BigAg at the expense of the little guy. Mr. Allen showed me that many of those "little guys" are black farmers:

"For black farmers in the twentieth century who outlasted the upheaval of the Great Migration [northward], there were more subtle forces that drove them off their land. In 1982, the bipartisan U.S. Commission on Civil Rights issued a report called 'The Decline of Black Farming in America' that attempted to understand why black farmers were leaving the profession at a rate of two and a half times greater than that of whites. The committee found that one important reason was that black farmers were small farmers. . . . Almost all of the technological innovations that the United States government had subsidized over the previous decades, the authors acknowledged, were geared toward increasing the productivity of large farms -- and not to making small farms sustainable."

There's a lot packed into that quote, including public policy (subsidies), the dangers of over-efficiency in farming, and the racial disparities in loss of farming opportunities. Most importantly, it speaks to our united interest in supporting small, local farmers. Through this and similar sentiments scattered throughout the book, I discovered an unanticipated affinity with people of color, coming to the recognition that they feel even more acutely than others the effects of policies and procedures that are not helpful or sustainable for any of us. It educated me about the challenges facing urban farmers without shaming me for my prior ignorance.

This is also reflected in Mr. Allen's description of his intentional method of helping young people want to eat real food - not through lecturing them, but by allowing them to be part of the experience. In describing the findings of a study about young people and nutritional habits, Mr. Allen relates:

"The researchers found no significant difference a year later in the vegetable and fruit consumption of children without nutrition education and those who received nutrition classes. The students who received hands-on training in a garden, however, increased their fruit and vegetable intake by more than two servings a day. My own experience tells me that if we can expose young people more often to fresh, delicious food - and create positive emotions around those experiences - that we increase the chances that they will adopt more fresh food into their diet as they begin to make independent food choices later in life." (p. 161)

The Good Food Revolution frequently uses gardening and agriculture as a metaphor for life:

"My father taught me that the fate of a seed can be predicted by the health of the soil where it takes root. This is true of summer crops. It can be true, in another sense, of people. We all need a healthy environment and a community that lets us fulfill our potential." (p.63)

He later described vermiposting in similar terms:

"The worms also made me reflect again on what it took to improve the lives of people. You couldn't place folks in the middle of a blighted neighborhood -- without a strong family unit and without easy access to healthy food -- and expect them to thrive. If you could create an environment in which people felt secure and healthy, though, you could provide the possibility of a better life."

A counter-balance to this is the story of Karen Parker, who overcame significant obstacles to thrive in the urban agriculture environment. He summed up her experience using another metaphor:

"Sometimes on the sidewalks of Milwaukee, there will be a flower or a tall week sticking defiantly out of the tiniest crack in the concrete. I realize that human lives can be like that. People find a way to persist even when they are provided the narrowest opportunity."

Wisdom about the value of patience and adversity, among other things, are also woven throughout the book. In a chapter introduction entitled "Grit," Will compares humans to worms, which need to have *just the right amount* of hard material in their diet in order to break down compost, "Human beings need the right amount of grit: not too much, but not too little, either." (p. 207)

In addition to the broader philosophical themes, the book offers plenty of sound, practical advice for the would-be gardener, non-profit organization, or even small business start-up. For the gardener, there is specific information about the ratio of elements needed for good compost, specific measurements of Growing Power's aquaponics equipment, and descriptions of tehniques for planting, cultivating, and even preparing produce.

For the non-profit or for-profit business, the book includes a very transparent look at the thought processes that underlie the successes - and failures - that brought both Will Allen and Growing Power to where they are today. The book describes various challenges faced by Mr. Allen and the organization, and describes the problem-solving techniques used to over come them. One example is the description of how he and a number of other farmers at a local farmers market decided to organize themselves into a co-op after facing the prospect of being shut down due to city budget constraints.

The practical advice and philosophical themes work together to inspire the reader to live a fulfilling life by harnessing her unique gifts, talents, experiences, and passions into something meaningful. Mr. Allen doesn't sugar-coat the value or necessity of hard work and perseverance - it is detailed on every page. But, he also highlights the rewards that can come from working hard at a meaningful endeavor.

The book covers a lot of ground and tells the story of many people, but it is not the least bit disjointed. In fact, I would say that the integrated way the book was put together with diverse people, circumstances, and events, is a reflection of the type of community envisioned within its pages.

Ohio State Freshmen Book 2015
By Marjean M. Hull
My grandson will be starting his freshmen year at The Ohio State University in a few weeks. This book is required reading for all new students at all of their campuses. In September Will Allen is scheduled to give a presentation on the main campus that will be broadcast to the satellite as well. My daughter and I decided that we read this book too and I'm glad we did. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in the health of our country both physically and mentally.

not indifferent
By warren laroche
I thought I was going to learn about new ways to eat. Ellie Wiesel says the opposite of love is indifference. Will Allen is anything but indifferent. I'm sometimes in tears reading about how hard he and his family works to have his millions of employees, his worms, convert food waste into affordable nutrition for "his people". We don't share the same skin tone but I think of him as a brother.
He is leading us to a society where the food is not provided by an industry that is more interested in shelf life than providing nutrition. He is leading us back to a time when we ate what we grew and saved some for when we couldn't. I hope more people read his book and begin to plan for the revolution which the FDA isn't being paid to lead.

Volkman offers 12 "excursions," or lesson plans, designed to help secondary librarians steer their students through the research process. The first two lessons present basic reference books and include 70 sets of practice questions with answer keys. Excursion 3 introduces the term-paper process, with detailed instructions for a start-to-finish research project as well as sample research notes and finished papers. The remaining assignments build on this knowledge. Each lesson includes instructions, reproducibles, and a bibliography. These practical ideas will adapt easily to a specific grade, curriculum, or reference collection. The sailing metaphor wears a little thin (materials are "cargo," objectives are "destinations"), but this navigational aid will benefit any librarian struggling to stay afloat in a sea of research.-Debbie Johnson, Richardson West Junior High School, TX

Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning was allegedly compiled by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) to diseminate information on the principles behind and importance of school library media programs (school libraries to the unitiated) to not only library media specialists (LMSs) but also teachers, administrators and other stakeholders in the school community.

While I can see the value of this book as a resource, I cannot imagine anyone reading it who is not specifically assigned (forced) to or already in training to become a LMS (or at least a children's librarian).

The book begins by explaining the vision behind the ideal school library media program and learning standards that should be used as part of any LMC curriculum. Subsequent chapters discuss how to build collaborative relationships to foster authentic learning and make an LMP an integral part of a school experience, learning and teaching, information access and delivery, program administration, and how to connect to the learning community.

The book also has appendixes on assessment, goals for student learning, and copies of various statements and policies from ALA. There are other appendixes, but since the book was last revised in 1998 some of the information is not extremely relevant anymore.

The book is basically a series of stated principles on each topic and then sub-topics thoroughly explaining each principle. On one hand it was disheartening that the text was so dry and dense. On the other, it was comforting to see that there is not really that much to being an LMS since it all fits into a thin volume and seems to come down to collaboration at all points.

Information Power is hard to get through because of the repetition and disjointed nature of the text. Nonetheless, it does really tell everything you need to know about an LMC. I found that the best way to read it in its entirety was to just tell myself to read a chapter a day until I was done. The appendix compilingALA policies was also especially useful. I can't see many readers picking this volume up for idle reading. But I can see it being a valuable resource in that office you'll have when you finally become a school library media specialist.

This book was required for two courses that I was taking. It explains the information about library media centers in pretty clear detail, but never actually describes where the idea of Information Power comes from, so I was lost a majority of the time. It was produced by the American Library Association, so I feel that the information is needed for anyone beginning a career in that field.
